Winter Solstice

So we celebrated the first day of Winter with a canyon hike, then mostly on the beach, ending with a nice totally clear view of the "Christmas Star" over the ocean. No pagans dancing around as far as I know, but there were some surfing Santas similar to this guy:

I hope that Santa is a strong swimmer; that rig he's wearing probably weight forty pounds when wet. Ho! Ho! Ho! Even on the shortest day of the year a drowning Santa will likely make the news feed. I missed by one day being born on the shortest day of the year and have had to settle for this day instead.....and all my life I've been tormented by the concept of whether the 20th and the 22nd are equal in length or not.

Thanks! On the length of days issue, my interest is in how many hours and minutes of sunlight (day) there is. Yesterday being the shortest day of the year due to the angle of the earth relative to the sun, always made me wonder if the days preceding and following the 21st are of equal time in daylight or not. I suppose this is a logical assumption since every day from June 21 to yesterday has a decreasing amount of daylight and every day from yesterday to next June 21st will have a daily increase in daylight time. But never mind that....I've got some celebrating and law breaking to do.

Yeah, that was a stock pic, but the ones we saw out had less bulk, and the red suit was on top of the wet suit. And our sky didn't have any of those grayish things in it.

I also have a great interest in having more hours of daylight. You could probably get the answer to your question by checking the times of sunup and sundown on the days preceding and following yesterday. I'm guessing they'd be close to the same, but damn, it does seem like winter days are all short.

A sharp cold front will move across the state on Christmas, pushing frost as far south as Orlando. Temperatures along the Florida Panhandle will plunge as cold as -4°C or -5°C. We didn't/haven't got much smoke out of it even thought it's not that far away (+/- 30 miles). The little town of Fallbrook was (literally) sweating it for a while, but eveybody got to go back to their houses by around 7 last night. We've hiked several times in the Santa Margarita preserve very close to where the fire started - I'm guessing it sadly took some damage. Mostly the fire went out toward Camp Pendleton, but it's burned a lot of acreage.
