Winter Solstice
So we celebrated the first day of Winter with a canyon hike, then mostly on the beach, ending with a nice totally clear view of the "Christmas Star" over the ocean. No pagans dancing around as far as I know, but there were some surfing Santas similar to this guy:

They're all 24 hours, dubmass. Happy Birthday, hominy!neoplacebo wrote: ↑Tue Dec 22, 2020 5:06 amI hope that Santa is a strong swimmer; that rig he's wearing probably weight forty pounds when wet. Ho! Ho! Ho! Even on the shortest day of the year a drowning Santa will likely make the news feed. I missed by one day being born on the shortest day of the year and have had to settle for this day instead.....and all my life I've been tormented by the concept of whether the 20th and the 22nd are equal in length or not.

Happy birthday, neo -
Yeah, that was a stock pic, but the ones we saw out had less bulk, and the red suit was on top of the wet suit. And our sky didn't have any of those grayish things in it.

I also have a great interest in having more hours of daylight. You could probably get the answer to your question by checking the times of sunup and sundown on the days preceding and following yesterday. I'm guessing they'd be close to the same, but damn, it does seem like winter days are all short.

Thinking of holiday costumes, we were in Bend, OR around Halloween and there was a witches covenvention or something on the river. Pretty cool, really.

Cool. Isn't that what used to be called a droodle or something? There were a lot of them - they were in some magazine, maybe Readers' Digest, on a puzzle page.

You made me look it up.
Droodles
Droodles was a syndicated cartoon feature created by Roger Price and collected in his 1953 book Droodles, though the term is now used more generally of similar visual riddles....
One of Price's original Droodles serves as the cover art for Frank Zappa's 1982 album Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch. Price's other captions for that drawing include "Mother pyramid feeding her baby." ...

I've seen Zappa twice (in person) and Appa 52 times (on tv).

Sorry about that, billy.p -
https://ca.news.yahoo.com/ten-million-c ... 00257.html
A sharp cold front will move across the state on Christmas, pushing frost as far south as Orlando. Temperatures along the Florida Panhandle will plunge as cold as -4°C or -5°C. The National Weather Service hints this could be the coldest Christmas since at least 1995 for the area. A big chunk of the state may fail to get much warmer than 10°C or 11°C on Saturday.
WARMER IN LABRADOR CITY THAN FLORIDA?
Moving over 3,000 kilometres northeast, it'll probably be warmer in Labrador City than a decent chunk of Florida by Christmas dinner.

All that typing and poof - it's gone. I'll be briefer.
Trying to be safe can have drawbacks.
Damn, I'm going north on Christmas Day to meet the kid halfway to Atlanta. We rented this huge completely open sided pavilion for 50 bucks at a state park.
Long underwear.

Probably too late to rent, but those outdoor heaters like football teams and outdoor cafes use work great.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Wed Dec 23, 2020 3:14 pmAll that typing and poof - it's gone. I'll be briefer.

Re: Winter Solstice
We didn't/haven't got much smoke out of it even thought it's not that far away (+/- 30 miles). The little town of Fallbrook was (literally) sweating it for a while, but eveybody got to go back to their houses by around 7 last night. We've hiked several times in the Santa Margarita preserve very close to where the fire started - I'm guessing it sadly took some damage. Mostly the fire went out toward Camp Pendleton, but it's burned a lot of acreage.
