Nice. There are so many creative and effective ways of nonviolent resistance to them. The folks that threaten or call for violence rarely follow through and the few that have tried that or otherwise acted to restrict free speech have sometimes ended up funding WBC in the subsequent civil suits.

A more appropriate question is, why have so many OWS protesters who were exercizing THEIR rights, been beaten, tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed and locked up, when the same doesn't happen to the WBC.

Yes, the OWS protesters were usually students, while the WBC are usually lawyers. But that just adds an extra layer of cowardice to the actions of the New York, Oakland and UC Davis police.

We don't know why. The latest possibility is his mother tutored at the school and he was jealous. It is reported a few of the kids killed had been tutored by his mom. The kid was mentally ill and no layman can definitively say what caused his actions.

No, we don't know definitively. But mass shooters, regardless of mental condition, always pick people or places that will make an impact. Unlike some serial killers who have particular needs to kill, mass shooters don't go after anonymous prostitutes that nobody will miss. My theory (guess) is that this guy wanted to hurt the community and thought killing their kids was the way to do it. Whether anybody would be upset if the WBC people got mowed down might be a matter of opinion, but it's for certain people would care less than they do for 20 first-graders and their teachers.

True that. It's not a matter of whether the teachers are packing or the theatre ticket-takers have Uzi's when the shooter doesn't expect to survive anyway, and may not intend to. And it's not like police stations haven't been targets before. They have. Partisan62's article was pretty weak on research. I don't know about gun shows, but I do know that most guns at those shows are unloaded. I wouldn't be surprised if there are examples. Hell, how about the shooting at the Flea Market on Hendersonville Rd. They had guns there, didn't they?

A nameless member of the hacker activist group “Anonymous” took credit on Wednesday for releasing a trove of information pertaining to members of the Westboro Baptist Church and claimed his group is planning to permanently wipe the hate group off the Internet.

“We’re starting out with their websites,” the person told progressive talk show host David Pakman. “As far as we know, the Jester — he’s an internationally known hacker himself — has taken down 18 of the 19 Westboro Baptist Church websites permanently. The only one we know of right now is GofHatesFags.com.”

Despite the claim, there appear to be 10 Westboro Baptist Church domains currently in operation, including AmericaIsDoomed.com, JewsKilledJesus.com and GodHatesIslam.com, among others.

Pakman inquired whether they believe that breaking the law to orchestrate the hack would be morally proper, and the hacker basically said yes, but admitted that they’ve not yet broken any laws in their campaign against the church, explaining that the earlier leak was accomplished purely with searches of publicly available information.

The hacker group has been on a campaign against the Westboro Baptist Church since they announced plans to picket the funerals of the Sandy Hook massacre victims.

Whether they can actually knock the church’s properties off the Web for good remains to be seen, but members of the group have been pretty effective in causing mayhem for other targets in the past, like former HBGary CEO Aaron Barr. However, at least two people were arrested over that hack, and the company is back online today.

The group has been subject to previous online attacks, too. A member of Anonymous hacked the Westboro website in 2011 and took it offline while simultaneously appearing on a live interview with Pakman and church spokesperson Shirley Phelps-Roper.

Let 'em be. They subtly taint all the more "respectable" religious bigots out there. Plus, not many folks manage to bring gays and biker vets together.

Well, they do carry the name "Baptist Church" but I'm not so sure most people can't see the difference in them and the generic Baptist people. Not that the generic ones are harmless, but they don't usually go around protesting funerals. I'm a believer in "I may disagree with what you say, but will defend your right to say it" at least conceptionally, from a government standpoint. But, at the risk of invoking "Godwin", a la "when they came for the...." I also don't believe good people can sit by and let evil have a free pass.
