Amateur wrestling

Unread post by Jasmine »

I saw this on YouTube. Gable Steveson is an Olympic champion and multi-time NCAA champion. He just got upset by an Air Force vet and apparently Trump supporter.

I don’t understand how amateur wrestling works, but apparently the guy did something to score three points right near the end of the match. The crowd was going crazy.

Steveson signed with the WWE and was considered a top prospect, but it never worked out.

It's called a nearfall, meaning one wrestler has control over the opponent and is able to hold him for 2-3 seconds in a position essentially close to being pinned. If it's a 3 second hold, it scores 3 points.

Wow. Thank you. Are you an amateur wrestling aficionado? Did you compete?

I only watch it when the Olympics is on, at least for the 3 minutes they televise it. I wrestled at UNC back in the early Jurassic.

There are now probably a few hundred or so for a top college program. Back in my day there weren't very many. Michigan matches for which Kelly Ripa shows up may draw more. Anyway, it's not fair to compare the sports. One of them requires extraordinary agility, strength, mobility, and courage and the other is soccer. Bada boom.

One of them requires extraordinary speed, endurance, accuracy, teamwork and courage and the other is men hugging each other, nttawwt.

Back in your day soccer had not yet crossed the Atlantic . . . and neither had the Pilgrims. :P

That was lame. Lady O was hoping for a video of some goalie leaping up, doing a flip and stopping a shot on goal upside down with the other team kicking at his head.

Not staged, exactly. In a real game, but a friendly. Nothing really on the line.

:D It was offside, too. No risk at all, but still cool. I've never heard of 'scorpion kick' before.
