Note the huge differences. The CIA factbook shows Canada with at least 200 billion barrels of oil, while the BP year-end report map you posted shows Canada with just 16 billion barrels of proven reserves.

Here's the raw data from BP for the 2009 version their map: (XLS)

Canada's 16 billion barrels in 2007 jumped to 28.6 billion barrels in 2009. More importantly, the spreadsheet shows that they don't count the oil from the oil sands. That oil - 150.7 billion barrels - is listed separately at the bottom of the "proved reserves" page. Canada should be 10x the size on the BP map.

Likewise the figures for OPEC countries are notoriously exaggerated. OPEC rules allow each country to export an amount of oil each year directly proportional to their "proven reserves." Which is why their "proven reserves" got a lot larger in the mid-'80s without any new oil being discovered. Saudi Arabia may be running out of oil

BP's figure on the map for Venezuela is more believable. In the next five years though, their "proven reserve" jumped from 77 to 296.5 billion barrels - more than Saudi Arabia. I suspect this had more to do with Hugo Chavez's influence than with oil exploration.
