Rarely has a legislator expressed what he thinks of the public with such eloquence and and brevity as Republican Tommy Tucker, Chairman of the North Carolina Senate's State and Local Government Committee.
So honestly.
So powerfully.
Challenged by a reporter to record a voice vote on a bill that would allow city and county governments to post public notices, traditionally published in newspapers, solely on government websites, so that the Committee's members would have to own up to their votes, how did Tucker respond?
"I AM THE SENATOR.
YOU ARE THE CITIZEN.
YOU NEED TO BE QUIET."

Re: Government's Opinion Of You, In Thirteen Words
I may have to send that guy a note; I sent one to the two sponsors of the "state religion" resolution not long ago urging both of them to apologize and resign. Ford was one of them; I forget who the other wingunt was. I'm from TN but have been in NC almost 30 years.....it's like the wingunts are spawning without restraint here in the southeast. It sort of makes my ass drag.

Everybody put that on your facebook page if you have one, tweet if you do that, or pass it around email...write to the newspaper, whatever. Let's get that quote out and tag it to the Republicans.

They'd s**t a brick if they got a donation from AZ! I got enough problems of my own though; have at it, y'all.Vrede wrote:rstrong, you should send at least a token amount, just for the smiles it'll create when they get an Alberta contribution.
I can hear the rebuttal now: "My words were taken out of context!"

It appears that rstrong's hoopala is over a bill that would allow local governments to save money by not having to publish overdue taxes, foreclosures, etc.
Although Tucker's response is that of an idiot, it's not really that big of a deal. The libs are stumbling over themselves making a mountain out of a molehill.

Link...At a hearing Tuesday in Raleigh on this very topic, our State Senator — Republican Tommy Tucker — speaking on the floor of the Senate told a newspaper publisher “I am the senator. You are the citizen. You need to be quiet.”
Later after complaining about “a blistering editorial” about this bill, Tucker cut off a fellow senator who wanted a roll call vote on the bill. Tucker then abruptly gaveled the session to a close and walked out.
That both explains why people don’t trust goverment and why government should not be trusted to post public notices only online...

Manitoba, actually. Though I am currently remote desktop'd into a server in Alberta.Vrede wrote:rstrong, you should send at least a token amount, just for the smiles it'll create when they get an Alberta contribution.
I wouldn't hesitate to donate money regarding American political issues like gun control or trade or the "war on terror" or patents and copyright, or the environment, where the issue overflows into Canada whether we like it or not. Nor do I hesitate to correct politicians or bloggers when they publish or parrot gross disinformation about Canada, our healthcare system for example. Or as an ally, to speak out when I think the US is unjustly criticized. And certainly I'll join the conversation on global issues.
This topic however strikes me as a local issue, one that's not really my business. Posting about it and making fun of the "me king, you serf, shut up" senator is OK, of course. Especially among friends here.
But donating money to a political organization in this case I think is going too far. Should the Republicans hear that a foreign donation went into Progress NC Action's campaign, it could be used against them. And I think rightly so.
I'd be interested in otherwise, if anyone disagrees.

I think it's probably the ones proposing the change that are making the mountain, since they're the ones who introduced the bill. But past that, it's not unreasonable to look for better, more cost effective means to distribute information. Lots of people aren't reading newspapers, either.. http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/medi ... int-radio/Leo Lyons wrote:It appears that rstrong's hoopala is over a bill that would allow local governments to save money by not having to publish overdue taxes, foreclosures, etc.

However, I think the proposal to publish exclusively on the government website has nothing to do with increasing the effectiveness of communication to the citizenry.

Goodmon, the latest in the family to run the company that made Jesse Helms (in)famous, does tend to favor Dems in his support and contributions... http://www.carolinaplotthound.com/Jim-B ... donations/
I hope he'll keep at them on this issue. This is ridiculous.

Re: Government's Opinion Of You, In Thirteen Words
It would seem I have been banned from the ncleg.net after my emails to the state religion bill sponsors a week or so ago. I consider this to be unfair since I am a resident of the state and am registered to vote here. I wanted to send an email congratulating Tommy Tucker on his remarkable stupidity......in other words, I wanted to remark on his stupidity, and thought I did quite well, but the email came right back as unable to be sent. I suppose my remarks to representative Ford and his idiot sidekick were not as well received as I had hoped. I'm thinking of getting another email address just to be able to (temporarily) correspond to these various loons but am not sure if it's worth the effort. What should I do?

You probably don't even need another account; most email accounts let you set up multiple aliases. I routinely set up aliases for people on our mail server, first name, first name / last initial and first initial / last name. Someone named David will have an alias "Dave." Unless they block your entire domain, an alias should work.
If they've published an email address for comment, they have no ethical right to block polite comment they disagree with. This is the sort of thing where down the road, after blocking those who disagree with them, they publish statistics showing how most of the comments they DO receive, agree with their policies.

Re: Government's Opinion Of You, In Thirteen Words
That sounds good to me. Actually, I did get a reply from representative Ford (he chastised me for not realizing his "state religion" boondoggle was a "resolution" and not a "bill" that would change the law) but I wrote back and told him that that didn't make any difference and that wingnuttery is wingnuttery. I'll have one bourbon, one scotch, and one beer.O Really wrote:It's not like they actually read it, or give a ratzass what you think. Re: Government's Opinion Of You, In Thirteen Words
I got the email address from the NC state legislature site. If I thought that I was giving any of them angst and aggravation, I would write some of them every day. They're just not worth my time and effort. At the rate they're going, they'll soon be so mired in wingunttery they won't have time to acknowledge their constituents. Besides, I want them to know it's me that calls them on their lunacy. I think my next note will be a confession to my rapidly manifesting mental delusion which is causing me to have a powerful hankering for a big gun with no questions asked and how I wanted to thank them before it's too late. okrstrong wrote:HE IS THE SENATORneoplacebo wrote:It would seem I have been banned from the ncleg.net after my emails to the state religion bill sponsors a week or so ago.
