2020 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Harris is out. I wasn't a supporter, but I think she contributed to the debate.

Also dropped out:

Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak - Who?
Miramar, Florida, Mayor Wayne Messam - Who?
Montana Gov. Steve Bullock - I've heard of him.
Rep. Beto O'Rourke - I'll be interested to see what his next act is.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/two-2020-can ... 54632.html
... There are now 15 Democratic hopefuls running for president....

Only six candidates so far have qualified for the December (19) debate, according to the Washington Post:
former Vice President Joe Biden,
South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg,
Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar,
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Harris had qualified before she dropped out.

Candidates have until Dec. 12 to meet the qualifications, which include earning 4% or more support in at least four polls, or hitting 6% support in two early state polls. Those states include Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Nevada. Candidates must also get at least 200,000 unique donors to qualify for the debates....

I see that this might be unclear. It's 23 House Repugs that are abandoning ship so far. Last I heard only 3 Dems are bailing out, but maybe a couple more have joined the list.

He did this a week before the filing deadline, thus messing up the Repugs somewhat. Uncertain if the district is blue with the recent un-gerrymandering, but we've got Asheville back.

I was thinking the other day that maybe voting districts could be defined by zip code. I've never seen a zip code map but logically you'd think it would be a more equitable or benign way to delineate voting districts. My city has five zip codes that I know of; Asheville has six that I know of. Based on that, a district could maybe consist of 50 or 75 zip codes, depending on total population in that range of codes. Or maybe just designate voting districts by county like these five or ten counties are in this district and these five or ten in another district. To me, this seems more rational than the way districts have been drawn in the past. And of course the number of zip codes or counties included in a district would depend on the aggregate population of those particular areas. In either scenario, districts like these would be a more equitable representation of all voters in a given area. But then again, I may have been drinking and breaking the law when this idea seized me; it seemed like a good thing at the time. ok

I think it's more important who is doing the districting than the method used. Partisans and bigots will find a way to screw things up. Nonpartisans and experts, within the constraints of law like ensuring proportionate racial representation, will find a way to make things fair.

There's a lot of speculation about an Impeached POSPOTUS Trump Admin* appt, perhaps well before Nov, perhaps replacing Mulvaney as Chief of Staff. We generous people of WNC may be sharing Meadows with the rest of the country, and he might be MORE visible and impactful than he is now. You're welcome.

Well, that's what i mean; no amount of partisan fervor or bigotry has any control over the zip code system or the physical boundaries of counties. Nobody can manipulate either of them. I can't conceive of anything that would be more fair. As for demographic characteristics, using the concept of a group of counties affords the participation of all groups within those counties; granted, this system would be somewhat skewed in the sense that some counties are wealthier, whiter, poorer, more ignorant, or less racially diverse than others, but taken overall, I consider such a plan much more equitable than the current system.

Well, I guess the peaceful partier would not like this; a MN voter has sued because trump is the only one on the GOP ballot in the state's Republican primary. Looks like my view was more correct than his.

Otherwise known as the "I'm really, really old tour". Plus, the logo makes it look like "Jo" is speeding backwards. Fitting.
