Unlike football, though, Cinderellas can sometimes hang around to the final four. But unless your name is Villanova, some big school is likely to take away the ring. At least basketball gives everyone a chance to play. Meanwhile, it's fun to follow the Aztecs.

Aztecs go for #21 this afternoon against UNLV. Long past their Tarkanian glory days, UNLV has been dunked by SDSU 15 out of the last 16 meetings. Hopefully there won't be a bad surprise.

Aztecs snuck one out, only by 4.

Go Terps! I've got nothing really against Indiana except that it's still wearing the Bobby Knight stench, so it's always good to see them go down.

Congrats.

Go Terps!

Blew a halftime lead, came back to win by 1 with 14 seconds left, lucky that an IN layup then didn't fall. Whew, now #17, coulda been unranked tomorrow.

I'll always dislike TX Tech for then hiring him with the stench.
UNC > Miami bigly, congrats or condolences, is now 3rd worst in the ACC over Miami and Wake.

I think the UNC season is pretty much over. Maybe pull out a win over some ranked team in a flashback of who they are (were), but otherwise unless they manage to win the ACC tourney they'll be spending March Madness with their pools and TV's like the rest of us. Too bad, I wonder how many blue-chip recruits are re-thinking their desire to wear the Carolina Blue?

Ironic timing:
Roy Williams passes Dean Smith on all-time wins list while Bob Huggins ties Adolph Rupp

It’s been a difficult season in Chapel Hill.

But after five unsuccessful attempts, Roy Williams logged his 880th career victory as North Carolina posted a 94-71 win over Miami on Saturday, passing his mentor and NCAA coaching legend Dean Smith in the process. The win broke a five-game losing streak for the 9-10 Tar Heels.

Smith retired from North Carolina in 1997 as the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history with 879 wins. That number has since been surpassed by Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (1,148), Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim (959), Indiana and Texas Tech’s Bob Knight (902) and now Williams among men’s coaches.

Williams’ legacy next to Smith’s

Williams reached the milestone in nine fewer games than Smith took to notch his tally and continues to entrench his legacy alongside that of the basketball icon. Williams has a 880-244 career record and has coached the Tar Heels to three national championships since returning to Chapel Hill from Kansas in 2003.

Smith tallied a 879-254 record and led UNC to two national championships and 11 trips to the Final Four. He retired as one of the great teachers and innovators in the history of the game. Williams’ teams still thrive using the secondary fast break offense that Smith developed decades ago....

AP Rankings

Other than #8 & 9 Villanova and Duke flipping, no changes in the top 10. Amazing after all of the Nov & Dec craziness.

1 Baylor 17-1 Ugh.
2 Gonzaga 21-1 Cool, yippee for Sister O.
3 Kansas 16-3 Ugh.
4 San Diego State 21-0 Wow.
5 Florida State 17-2 Ugh.
6 Louisville 17-3 1st in ACC.
7 Dayton 18-2 Dayton? :headscratch:
8 Villanova 16-3
9 Duke 16-3 Just had easy Miami (FL) last week, won by 30. 3rd in ACC.
10 Seton Hall 15-4
11 Oregon 17-4 Inched up from #12 after beating the unranked LA teams at home. 1st in PAC 12.
12 West Virginia 16-3
13 Kentucky 15-4
14 Michigan State Dropped from #11  .
15 Maryland 16-4 Up from #17  . 3rd in Big 10.
16 Butler 16-4
17 Auburn 17-2 Dropped from #16, I guess to make room for Maryland. Sorry :P . 3rd in SEC.
18 Iowa 14-5
19 Illinois 15-5
20 Colorado 16-4 Nice.

(31) East Tennessee State Buccaneers 18-3 neoplacebo is beside himself.

Clemson, WA and UNC did not get any votes. UNI Panthers, Rhode Island Rams and Harvard Crimson did get votes.

They really are a good team, but it will be interesting to see what happens in March when their opposition will undoubtedly get tougher.

#18 Iowa 72, @#15 Maryland 82. 17-4. That might be good for a small rankings bump.
#11 Oregon 77, @California 72. Not that I hate Cal. I'd be rooting for Cal if it was the ranked team.
#20 Colorado 68, @UCLA 72. Awww. Not that I hate UCLA. I'd be rooting for UCLA if it was the ranked team. It won't get ranked now, it's 11-10. Colorado was doing well, it's 16-5.

Sat., February 1

I've got no problem with the Dook-UNC game. 'Heels had their best game of the season, and didn't really have anything to gain by a win other than self-respect and bragging rights. Dook, on the other hand, would have probably taken a dump in the rankings if they had lost to this years' pathetic pretense of a UNC team.

College basketball's AP poll shows just how chaotic this season has been

... Schools like Michigan State, Florida and North Carolina were all preseason top-10 teams and now are on the verge of NIT berths.

Tom Izzo’s Spartans were ranked No. 1 coming into the season and they fell out of the rankings this week after losing three games in a row, including a loss at Michigan last weekend (they rebounded Tuesday night with a road win at Illinois). To go even deeper, there has only been one other No. 1-ranked team to fall out of the Top 25 during the regular season in the past 10 years. It was Kentucky during the 2013-14 season and the team slipped out of the Top 25 after Week 19.

Twelve teams that were ranked at the start of the season are no longer in the Top 25. VCU, Purdue, Arizona, St. Mary’s, Xavier, Ohio State, Utah State, Memphis, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Michigan State are all on the outside looking in. Meanwhile, San Diego State, Dayton, Florida State, Penn State, Colorado, Marquette, Butler, Houston, Iowa, Illinois and Creighton are all in the mix after Week 15....

(team-by-team discussion including:
San Diego State Aztecs, Preseason rank: Unranked, Week 15: No. 4
Dayton Flyers, Preseason rank: Unranked, Week 15: No. 6 :confusion-scratchheadblue:
Gonzaga Bulldogs, Preseason rank: No. 8, Week 15: No. 2
Michigan State Spartans, Preseason rank: No. 1, Week 15: Unranked
North Carolina Tar Heels, Preseason rank: No. 9, Week 15: Unranked :(
Maryland Terrapins, Preseason rank: No. 7, Week 15: No. 9   )

The chaos continues:

(Unranked) Georgia Tech (11-13, 6-8 ACC) knocks off No. 5 Louisville as Jordan Nwora struggles

No. 23 Creighton wins at No. 10 Seton Hall

No. 9 Maryland edges (unranked) Nebraska 72-70 for 7th straight victory

Whew.

Wiley, No. 11 Auburn survive in OT again, 95-91 over Alabama

4 OT wins in last 5 games! Recovery must be the reason billy.pilgrim ain't posting much.

Otoh, San Diego State clinched the Mountain West with 4 games left to play, congrats.

College basketball's NET rankings, explained

... The Ratings Power Index (RPI) was made up of three components:

A team's winning percentage
Average opponent's winning percentage
Average opponent's opponent's winning percentage

The NET includes more components than just winning percentage. It takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses....

Aztecs now 25-0 and play the 12-1 (home) blue-field people next.

And I'm pretty sure Chapel Hill is way past embarrassing this year. By now they're eating dumpster food, shitting on the sidewalk, and getting drunk on hair spray.
