Correct. Christmas trees, Santa Claus, reindeer-drawn sleds, stockings hung over the fireplace, and mistletoe most assuredly are *not* Christian symbols, but come from Norse and other religions. The connection between today's Santa and the Saint Nicholas of Catholicism is tenuous at best, and saints don't feature in most other flavors of Christianity.

Yes, there is Christian heritage, in the same way that the original Christian holiday -- very different from today's -- had Roman heritage: it was put on the 25th to coincide with Saturnalia, a day of feasting and celebration which emphasized peace and goodwill to all (sound familiar?). Yes, its name is Christian, in the same way that our names for four of the days of the week are Norse. Taking a holiday at Christmas no more implies belief in Christ than agreeing to meet on Wednesday implies belief in Woden.

They split from the imperial (Roman) church before at least *some* of the original books and beliefs were edited out. Syriac Christians still worship in a dialect of Aramaic.

I've needed to know more about the Nestorian, Coptic ..etc.. doctrines and in that they appear to not seek world domination as vehemently .. that alone says that they are much less Romanized than our current flavor of Christian..

This has piqued an interest in religious history east of Constantinople.. .. .. . Not that it exists.. I'm familiar with the sects and schisms that separated them but how is it that they avoided the violence and misery brought on by the Western Church.. i.e. Was their belief tempered with the more pacific Far East religions.. ?? Were the locals already accustomed to subjugation??.. hummm..
