Are you so dumb you can't figure out who said what? My quote was what Bannination posted; not necessarily what he personally said. No deceit intended. As you say, it was a funny irony and I posted a famous quote to go along with it, not bitching about the spelling (such as you always do with your (sic) marks.)Vrede wrote:You chose to bitch about the spelling and you chose to deceive about who did the misspelling. Don't whine at me because I noticed the funny irony. Just man-up, correct, and apologize.
Being the asshole you are, you have to pick the fly shit out of the pepper in everything that everyone posts to make yourself appear so damn superior. Come down off your frickin' soapbox and join the human race and stop being such an asshole about everything.

Well.... the Winter Solstice was a Pagan holiday long before being usurped by Romanized Christians... .bannination wrote:... I think it deserved it's own thread....

Re: Christmas for Atheists
Correct. Christmas trees, Santa Claus, reindeer-drawn sleds, stockings hung over the fireplace, and mistletoe most assuredly are *not* Christian symbols, but come from Norse and other religions. The connection between today's Santa and the Saint Nicholas of Catholicism is tenuous at best, and saints don't feature in most other flavors of Christianity.Crock Hunter wrote:Well.... the Winter Solstice was a Pagan holiday long before being usurped by Romanized Christians... .bannination wrote:... Yes, there is Christian heritage, in the same way that the original Christian holiday -- very different from today's -- had Roman heritage: it was put on the 25th to coincide with Saturnalia, a day of feasting and celebration which emphasized peace and goodwill to all (sound familiar?). Yes, its name is Christian, in the same way that our names for four of the days of the week are Norse. Taking a holiday at Christmas no more implies belief in Christ than agreeing to meet on Wednesday implies belief in Woden.

And a Happy Dies Natalis Solis Invicti to you ... .
I've said many times that there hasn't been a Christian in over 1700 years... However... "Romanized Christianity" has been quite popular.. ..

That was not a flub, I did it on purpose; but not to attribute the quote to Bannination, but to attribute the post to Bannination. Satisfied?Vrede wrote:You had to actively remove the quote box to make it look like Banni said it.

I dunno. One could make the case that at least some denominations of the Syriac / Church of the East Christians are pretty close to the original. They split from the imperial (Roman) church before at least *some* of the original books and beliefs were edited out. Syriac Christians still worship in a dialect of Aramaic.Crock Hunter wrote:I've said many times that there hasn't been a Christian in over 1700 years... However... I've needed to know more about the Nestorian, Coptic ..etc.. doctrines and in that they appear to not seek world domination as vehemently .. that alone says that they are much less Romanized than our current flavor of Christian..

I dunno about that either. Take a look at the maps in both links above. With the imperial church to the west and later surrounded by Islam, the Syriac / Church of the East Christians spread Christianity east into India, Tibet, China and Mongolia, with some of signs of their presence in Korea and Japan.Crock Hunter wrote:I've needed to know more about the Nestorian, Coptic ..etc.. doctrines and in that they appear to not seek world domination as vehemently .. that alone says that they are much less Romanized than our current flavor of Christian..rstrong wrote:I dunno. Don't you think that there simply is little comparison in Western, Romanized, Christianity's "conversion at the tip of a sword" and that of Oriental Christian sects??.. Granted.. any state religion can and often is brutal but not to the extent of what we now consider Christianity..rstrong wrote:I dunno about that either. Take a look at the maps in both links above. I like Christmas. Since we have no clue as to when Jesus was born,
I have no problem with celebrating it close to the Winter solstice.

This has piqued an interest in religious history east of Constantinople.. .. .. . Not that it exists.. I'm familiar with the sects and schisms that separated them but how is it that they avoided the violence and misery brought on by the Western Church.. i.e. Was their belief tempered with the more pacific Far East religions.. ?? Were the locals already accustomed to subjugation??.. hummm..rstrong wrote:One could make the case that at least some denominations of the Syriac / Church of the East Christians are pretty close to the original.
