Social Distancing 1A

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I see no problem with washing and am inclined to do so myself. Even just dish soap does mechanical virus removal if not disinfecting like bleach water does. The one caution is to wash gently enough that any virus isn't tossed into the air before it's washed off.

Some produce ripens/spoils faster after washing. Not sure what the answer is to this, perhaps keeping it well bagged and only washing just prior to consumption/cooking.

Then, it looks like just not touching items for 3 days will be sufficient even without washing. I'm not sure how much to extend this time for things that went straight into the frig/freezer, perhaps a lot.
Because there isn't a problem unless the good doctor doesn't know about rinsing and is speaking from personal experience.

Yeah, don't wash your potatoes unless cooking same day. But you can buy bagged and throw the bag away.

Even the most seemingly innocent contacts have some potential to spread the virus and best practices will always have holes, but when it's easy to eliminate something that I normally did before - I have been and my bald-headed mullet is the better for it - or not. Life is all about perspective.

You can soak delicate produce like lettuce in distilled vinegar (or cider or wine vinegar) for 10 minutes before consuming....
Does that kill CV-19?

That would be apparently not. "Disinfection recommendations using vinegar are popular online, but there is no evidence that they are effective against the coronavirus." Consumer Reports.

Now you're just ducking. You did mention virus removal by rinsing in the same post, and O Really drew the same conclusion from your vinegar post that I did. As for me, I was sincerely interested in whether you were offering up a potentially lifesaving tip - seems relevant to me.

I don't believe that my grandmother ever prepared lettuce any other way than "wilted" - she would drop the leaves into a hot cast iron skillet with bacon grease.

no virus, germ or tapeworm can stand hot bacon grease in a cast iron skillet.

Interesting, thanks.

#s 1 and 2 are convincing for viruses in general. Not tested on CV-19, but I don't know why it would be any hardier than other viruses.

#3 is specific to Salmonella typhimurium. In general bacteria are hardier than viruses, but I don't know if that applies across the board.

Here's the Consumer Reports article that O Really quotes:

These Common Household Products Can Destroy the Novel Coronavirus
CR shows you how to use them and tells you which products to stay away from

Unfortunately, it does not provide the specific sourcing for its info, though Stephen Thomas, M.D., chief of infectious diseases and director of global health at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y. and the EPA are mentioned in its intro.

If it was me I would rinse the lettuce before and after the vinegar, just to add another layer of protection. I wonder how many times the same bowl of 10% or stronger vinegar can be reused, if any.

I've been social distancing to the max; got some of that lemon juice that makes you invisible. These fuckers have no clue that I'm in here being invisible. I chuckle about it and don't even try to stay down.

This is incredibly counterproductive. People gathered to watch the US Navy hospital ship dock in New York City.

Stay home. Practice social distancing.

Seems to me they could have avoided the crowd waiting for the boat, but maybe they gave New Yorkers too much credit for having enough sense not to do something so stupid.

I don't think actual arrests - cuffs, back of car, drive to station - are useful here, but they do need to make a strong statement. You've still got people like that yayhoo on Spring Break that just think WTF, it's just flu. (Of course, idiots who think that's no big deal obviously haven't had a case of real flu themselves.) Or people like the guy on the local news tonight lifting his bike over the "closed" chain, then lifting his kids' bikes - and doing it while the news photog ran video. Cops were waiting for him when he got back and he'll likely get a fine. Not to sound like a curmudgeon, but around here it really does look like it's mostly youngish people who are the worst offenders. Walking around in packs, driving 4-5 in a car, hanging out around picnic tables, etc. Hey, cops don't have to harass marijuana users anymore, they've already bored of rousting homeless - why not enforce distancing?

The cops can work this to everyone's advantage if they observe social distancing while firing tear gas canisters toward any gathering of more than a few people. The fire department can also assist while observing social distancing as they deploy fire hoses on those same crowds. And if they can manage to run disinfectant through the city water mains to the hydrants, they can have this think licked toot sweet.

That's cruel ;) . The cops should stick to tasers, sonic devices and plastic bullets. Don't want to make people cough.
Travel Patterns Show Sharp Split, Swayed by Stay-at-Home Orders

... people in Florida, the Southeast and other places that waited to enact such orders ...

In Jacksonville, the sheriff’s department had to send out officers over the weekend to break up block parties. In Spartanburg, South Carolina, people were still going to the hardware store to buy supplies for home-improvement projects, and pictures from children’s birthday parties and play dates were being posted on Facebook. And along the shorelines in Florida and Alabama, communities that rely on tourists to help drive the economy instead looked with frustration at out-of-state license plates on the street....

Florida waited so long to shut down travel that it will struggle to control local outbreaks even if people immediately change their behavior significantly, said Thomas Hladish, an infectious disease modeler at the University of Florida. People who now sequester themselves at home still risk having brought the virus home to their families, he said.

“A lockdown order right now is not going to be a silver bullet with containing this,” Hladish said. “It will absolutely save lives. But in order to really have a big effect with social-distancing measures, you would have had to move it back in time.”

In Spartanburg, a city of 37,000 people in northeast South Carolina, the City Council this week delayed putting into place any official order. “I’d like to see us wait at least another couple of weeks for this discussion,” said one councilwoman, Ruth Littlejohn….

On Tuesday, Gov. Henry McMaster of South Carolina issued an order closing businesses deemed nonessential.

Other areas reduced travel weeks ago, the data show, especially in California, New York and Washington, which were the first to experience large outbreaks. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said Tuesday that changes in behavior were already bringing down the level of new cases in those places....

Hell, things are bound to get a lot better now that Jared Kushner has assumed a role. Coming off his monumental success in the Israeli vs Palestinian problems, we can only now look forward to a sort of geometric reversal of the recent upward trend of infection. Word is that Kellyanne Conway will soon be made a General in the National Guard in order to straighten them out. Yeah, we've got it made.

I have used, without high satisfaction level, Skype and GoToMeeting, and Zoom is way easier to use. Seems the security issues reported are primarily (a) among iOS people; and (b) related mostly to recording of sessions/chats. Seems to me if I'm using Windows/Android, don't record anything, or keep any recordings locally and not on Zoom's cloud, and don't divulge any sensitive info during a session, it should be fine.

Anybody have experience/thoughts on personal use of Zoom?

Not Zoom, but we use MSTeams (Microsoft Teams) for work. I'm very happy with it. You can use it for Instant Messaging, video/voice calls, and other things. It consolidates all communications to one app.

I may have to check out zoom for personal use. On android, I've used Duo.

Illinois Mayor Sends Police To Break Up Parties. They Found His Wife At One Of Them.

... “These are very serious times and I’m begging you to please stay at home,” Alton Mayor Brant Walker said on Saturday. “Parents, please keep your kids at home, doing so is vital to our health.”

On Monday, Walker issued a statement on Facebook saying police had found his wife at a bar in the city that was operating in violation of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home orders. Walker said he was embarrassed and apologized to his constituents....

Police told the Alton Daily News that officers broke up a party at Hiram’s Tavern early Sunday. The owner was arrested on an outstanding warrant for domestic battery while others in attendance received citations for reckless conduct....
