Re: The Music Thread
Delayed due to technical difficulties.
Although the message is from another time and seems out of place today. Hop in the WayBack Machine for a trip back to the day when we all drank and drove with impunity.
RIP Jerry
You will be missed, maybe not for this

But definitely for this

There used to be quite a few "drive in" beer stores hereabouts. Most of them had black streaks along the side of the building from the rubber bumper inserts hitting the side of the building. The days of drinking and driving with impunity actually abetted by capitalism and the state. Make America Great Again indeed.

Escambia County allowed drinking while driving until 82 when the state made a statewide law.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Fri Oct 30, 2020 3:42 pmThere used to be quite a few "drive in" beer stores hereabouts. I still don't understand what's wrong with a construction worker grabbing a beer for the drive home. Seems better than stopping at a bar and ending up having 3 or 4.
Driving drunk is an entirely different matter. I don't think we are at all close to the approximate response to a .2, a .25 or a .3. It's pretty much the same for all. Escambia was .125, now we are .08.
I don't understand the same punishment for driving after 3 beers or 33 beers, or the even more extreme penalties for the 19 year old who drank a half of one beer.
MADD had a lot to do with more and more extreme punishment for smaller and smaller infractions.
I just read a glowing piece about the war on drunk drivers. Seems our laws have reduced drunk driving deaths from 21,000 in 82 to 13,000 in 2017.
I still see the bars packed (before corvid) and people driving home and a bare few getting caught. Mostly the drunk arrests come after the accident, same as before.
Seems to me that all the auto safety features kicked in about the same time and are by far more responsible for the decrease in deaths.
My proposal
Raise the .08 number to .1 or .12 and ticket the offense up to .15.
.15 to .2 or so could be similar to current
.2 to .25 serious fines and mandatory jail time.
Above .25 attempted manslaughter 5 to 10 years.
(Because they were lucky not to have killed)
We spent huge amounts of money on lights and warning systems after several wrong way crashes on the bridge. One woman at .3something drove half way across, like she was in a demolition derby, before she died.
Yeah, if they test at .3 and are driving, why shouldn't they get 10 years?
Once more Jerry with the little bitty rabbits leading him home by the light of their little bitty flashlights.

Yeah, back in the day it was as you say, after the accident that the drunk driver was arrested. Or else pure chance that a cop spotted the driver weaving around on the road. These days with the prevalence of cell phones a drunk driver has a much better chance of being busted from another citizen calling the cops about him. I would say that at least one out of ten drivers at any given time are intoxicated. Another twenty percent just can't fucking drive or drive stupid.

Re: The Music Thread
I lucked out during my hard drinking days and didn't have to drive drunk. One of the local hospitals sponsored a Tipsy Taxi. All you had to do is call a cab and tell them to bill Tipsy Taxi. The cab took me home on many nights.
They only do New Years Eve now.
Might be something that communities should look at. A lot cheaper than spending $200,000/year for some cop to arrest or ignore as he chooses.

Re: The Music Thread
Screw you CMA Awards.
"Jason Isbell and wife, Amanda Shires, are exiting the Country Music Association, with Johnny Cash’s daughter, Rosanne Cash, fully supporting the two country musicians’ decisions."
"upset at the fact many country legends who had passed away during the year weren’t honored as they believe the artists should’ve been."
"These include John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver."
I guess these folk aren't important to the antebellum and the American idol entertainment crowd. Kick em to the curb, after all, they're just boomers.

Just a while ago I was listening to the vinyl record of Ten Years After's early 70's album "A Space in Time" and, in reading the liner notes noticed that the bass player's name is Leo Lyons. No shit.

I think it would be sort of weird to be pulled over by a cop who has a British accent.....it would make me think he's way out of his jurisdiction or else he has an extreme gun fetish and left his native country just to be able to carry a gun.
