All Florida Men originated in New York City.
I checked, it's true.
May be. Only 35ish percent of Florida residents were born there, and 8% of the population did in fact move there from NY, though not necessarily the City - the highest percentage of any state. Nevertheless, I'd argue that Florida is perfectly capable of growing its own native "Florida Man", some of whom I've seen personally in the wild. Controlled breeding has been attempted, but the species seems to flourish in feral form.
One of my mom's sisters married a Florida man and she moved to Jacksonville with him. He was an interior decorator, or that's what they say.....anyway, I remember going to Jacksonville with my mom to visit her sister.....this was about 1960. My memory of the Florida man...his name was Don....is that he looked like a gambler.....tanned with slick dark hair. I also remember a fucking chameleon biting the shit out of the inside of one of my fingers while I was fucking around on their back patio. The whole thing should never have happened.

Damn smart of New York to export their wackos to Florida, if you ask me. They do seem to fit in.

Disclaimer: Yeah, I know that much of the article can apply to other states, even Dem ones, but this is the article I stumbled on.
Florida Is a COVID Nightmare—Even for Vaccinated People

By the end of next week, Nancy Krinick expects to get her second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. But the 67-year-old legal secretary from Sunrise, Florida, plans on keeping her daily routine of avoiding virtually all human contact even after she’s fully inoculated. The same goes for her sister and her brother-in-law, both of whom are over 65 and got their first shots together with her at Marlins Park in Miami, Krinick told The Daily Beast.

“With these new variants, we are still worried,” she said, adding, “It seems like this is never-ending.”

She will continue to get her groceries delivered to her home via Instacart, avoid dining out, and put off visiting her daughter in Knoxsville, Tennessee, until a majority of the U.S. population has been immunized, Krinick said.

As extra-contagious mutations of the coronavirus gather strength like a hurricane churning off the Atlantic coast, Floridians like Krinick see no sign of respite. While they have yet to issue formal guidance on congregating by vaccinated people, state and national health experts have assured the general public that the vaccines are effective—even, if perhaps less so, against the variants surging nationwide.

But in a state with a long history of pandemic recklessness and where mask mandates are nonexistent, vaccinated Floridians don’t want to risk getting infected by going out in public.

Here, getting a shot offers little more than a modicum of relief.

Thanks to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ ongoing approach of forcing his state to be wide-open for business and pleasure, surges in community spread seem virtually inevitable. Last weekend, despite warnings from state epidemiologists, a host of potential superspreader events took Tampa by storm, punctuated by legions of Buccaneers fans, a majority of them maskless, celebrating the home town’s victory when the Super Bowl wrapped up....

Meanwhile, the Biden White House is reportedly considering new restrictions on domestic travel with huge implications in Florida, which accounts for more than a third of all documented U.S. cases of the B-117 variant, also known as the highly contagious U.K. variant....

Seniors who spoke to The Daily Beast said DeSantis has been deliberately obtuse in what passes here for containing the pandemic. “The governor of this state is out of control,” said Charnizon. Krinick, the legal secretary, added: “DeSantis? Not a fan. I don’t think he’s doing anything.” ...
Crap, "normal" seems further and further away.

I saw the article, and yes, other states have similar issues but - big but - the difference is that De Santis et. al. are intentionally not doing anything to help. The vaccine obviously works as well in Florida as anywhere else, but the lack of effort and bad numbers make people afraid anyway. Back in the 80's sometime, Florida had a tourist-development ad with people on beaches, dining at sunset, etc. that ended with "Florida - the rules of different
here." I'd say that has a much darker meaning now.

How about "Florida; Die for Trump or Something Like Him." I think this will be a big hit.

It'll be especially funny if they never had enough to charge her for 1/6. So far, it doesn't sound like she's in 1/6 trouble. Smart.

Florida official to ignore DeSantis order to lower flags in honor of Rush Limbaugh

... Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried announced Monday that she would disregard an order by Gov. Ron DeSantis to lower flags in the state to half-staff to pay tribute to Limbaugh, the conservative firebrand radio host who died last week after a battle with lung cancer.

“Lowering to half-staff the flag of the United States of America is a sacred honor that pays respect to fallen heroes and patriots. It is not a partisan political tool,” Fried, a Democrat, said in a statement. “Therefore, I will notify all state offices under my direction to disregard the Governor’s forthcoming order to lower flags for Mr. Limbaugh — because we will not celebrate hate speech, bigotry, and division. Lowering the flag should always reflect unity, not division, and raising our standards, not lowering them. Our flags will remain flying high to celebrate the American values of diversity, inclusion, and respect for all.”
... Fried is Florida's only statewide elected Democrat. Last month, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, a close Trump ally, said he was considering challenging Fried in the 2022 elections.
Drunken lawyer Matty has exactly zero education or experience in agriculture or administration. So, Floridians will probably elect him.

The Bible may bear some responsibility in this as well. Hell, if the guy had been carrying a volume of the encyclopedia he may not have been shot. For that matter, if he'd had pants he may not have been shot. Overall I'd say the best policy is to just go ahead and shoot naked Bible bearers before things really get out hf hand.

Journalist Carl Hiaasen is retiring from the Miami Herald. Tells it like it is:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/without-flor ... 03861.html
Progress, if it happens, is slow. When I was a kid, hardly anyone running for office talked about the Everglades. Meanwhile, the part that wasn’t disappearing under pavement was being used as a free latrine by corporate agriculture and subdivisions.

These days, billions are being spent trying to save the besieged River of Grass, and every ambitious candidate — Democrat or Republican — waxes rapturously about it. A few of them might actually be sincere, but all of them know how to read the polls.

It would be lovely to report that other things have also changed for the better, but Florida’s wild places and clearest waters are still under assault from overdevelopment, opioids are killing more people than coke or street heroin ever did, racism thrives likes a fungal rash and corruption is more rampant than ever.

Millions of worried seniors are still awaiting COVID inoculations because they don’t live in gated communities full of rich Republicans writing checks to the governor’s re-election committee. Then again, who’s really surprised that a resort like Ocean Reef gets special vaccine shipments while regular folks in nearby Florida City get to sit in their cars for hours, praying the supply doesn’t run out?

As you read these words, some scrofulous tunnel rat in public office is busy selling your best interests down the road. It might be happening at your town council, zoning board, water district, or county commission — but it is happening.

I believe that so much is due to people moving here for retirement who just don't care about their new temporary home.

Iffen he hadn't been zonked out of his mind on that weed, he might have stopped after the baseball battery, cause Gramps was dead by that point, nothing more to be gained. That alone is example enough of how pot messes with your mind.
