Anyone have an opinion about the vaccine EO by DeSantis

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

It gets worse for DeSantis. Too bad the state repug majority will allow his crimes, same as the US Senate ignored trump's.

"A community newsletter obtained by the Herald showed that the majority of the people aged 65 and over living in the Ocean Reef Club community had received vaccinations at the start of the new year."

In support of Ron, we should remember that the rich are Essential; otherwise, they wouldn't be so rich.
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”

I rarely agree with him and maybe it's just my bias - 70 and very immune comprised, but as much as I don't like the man, I think he got this right. At least for a retirement state like Florida.

My appointment is for Monday at 10:30

The CDC also suggests putting young essential workers at the same priority level as people between the ages of 65-74. DeSantis says that’s what will happen in Florida.

“'The problem is people that are 73, 74 would be in the back of the line for a young, 21-year-old worker who’s considered, quote ‘essential’ – that doesn’t, I think, make sense. So for us in Florida, we’re making it clear in this executive order that our first priority for the general population – once the nurses, the doctors and the long-term care facilities are done – is to vaccinate people 65 and up,” DeSantis explained."

https://www.baynews9.com/fl/tampa/news/ ... -and-older
I think he's pandering for votes, as O Really suggests. DeSantis has not shown understanding of or concern for public health all year....
A rapid COVID-19 vaccine rollout backfired in some US states

Despite the clamor to speed up the U.S. vaccination drive against COVID-19 and get the country back to normal, the first three months of the rollout suggest faster is not necessarily better.

A surprising new analysis found that states such as South Carolina and Florida that raced ahead of others to offer the vaccine to ever-larger groups of people have vaccinated smaller shares of their population than those that moved more slowly and methodically, such as Hawaii and Connecticut.

The explanation, as experts see it, is that the rapid expansion of eligibility caused a surge in demand too big for some states to handle and led to serious disarray. Vaccine supplies proved insufficient or unpredictable, websites crashed and phone lines became jammed, spreading confusion, frustration and resignation among many people....

Seven states in the bottom 10 for overall vaccination performance — Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina and Missouri — had larger-than-average shares of their residents eligible for shots....
NC, AL and CA are not mentioned one way or the other in the article and it does not link the full 50 state analysis.

I'm now registered with 2 public health entities that will call when appts are available.
The local hospital says check back.
I'm not bothering with the less local Adventist hospital or the chain pharmacies. Nor am I looking at adjacent counties.

... that will call when appts are available.
Do you know anybody who was actually called?

My totally guess theory: There are never appointments available long enough for them to start down a wait list because those accessing the site constantly will snarf them up. When we were looking for our own, and since in helping some others get theirs, it's not unusual to find some openings and have them close literally in front of your screen before you could lock them down. Persistence, and a bit of luck is necessary until availability reaches saturation.

We'll see. On those 2 sites getting on the list to be called was the only option. I'll keep trying every day or two, but I don't have the patience to click endlessly.

I just wish they would make their sites such that you get a queued position. Problem solved. Does no good to programmatically reserve the spot everyone gets served in first come first serve, and no one has to keep checking the website every 5 minutes to see if a new appointment has opened up.

Want to get the vaccine sooner? Pick a time slot that most people can't hit, not only do you jump the queue, you keep employees busy during times not many people can hit anyway.

//Also realize that the distribution and logistics of the vaccine may make this impractical. It's much more practical for consumer goods.

//I'd never do that for other people, but if I was desperate I would do it for myself, nothing worse than refreshing pages manually.

I haven't been given a time slot option yet, but I'll be fine with oddballs.

I can't say what I would do if I was desperate for family, work or other reasons - probably seize any edge I could. Fortunately, my health risk factors are moderate and my lifestyle is very low risk. So, I'm okay with whenever. Another month or so and everyone will be good.

You are a reverse jinx. I just got the call from the Health Dept, 1.5 days after registering. My appt is Fri 3/26, Pfizer, 2nd shot on 4/23. I did not do the maniacal and frustrating continual clicking on any site.

In case anyone's interested, I self-identified as Group 4 - under 65 but with risk factors. I offered to tell them the risk factors, but they didn't care. They just took my word for it. The reg form they emailed me does ask, "How many conditions known to increase risk of severe illness from COVID-19 do you have? (Cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, heart conditions, weakened immune system, obesity/severe obesity, Smoking, diabetes)," but does not ask me to specify which ones.

They only opened up for Group 4 late last week or on Mon when I registered, so save a quirk like happened with you I could not have done much better.

Best of all, the special shot site is across the street from:

I did check the Henderson website and thought there might be a better chance of actually getting a call from them than from what we had. Glad it worked for you.

I hate to brag . . . but what the hell:

The impaler asked if I am allergic to Miralax. I played dumb and said, "There's Miralax in the vaccine?!"

She laughed and said, "No, one of its ingredients is, ______."

I said, "Good, I'd rather have the Bill Gates' microchip than a Miralax shot."

Her next laugh was a little too evil for my taste ;) . My arm is a tiny bit sore . . . and I haven't had to poop yet. I'm also not as fond of my MacBook as I was :confusion-scratchheadblue: . The whole operation was bigger than I expected, hundreds of us inside, and went smoother and faster than I would have guessed - less than 1/2 hour including the 15 minute post-shot wait.
