Single hurricane thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Yet after promises to monitor all barges, another broke loose a few days ago. Construction company had no idea when or how.
The report came from the property owners who found a barge had grounded
on their property causing damages to their seawall.

Contractor is claiming "sabotage"

Poor guy, first god gets him caught up in something clearly not his fault and now some mysterious sabatour(s) is out to make him look bad.

They still haven't repaired the bridge. Claiming late March for a partial reopening.

Turns out that they knew about the storm that they claimed appeared suddenly out of nowhere. They sent the state a request 3 days prior to the storm to extend the completion date because of the impending hurricane.

Plus, they have found some pre-Civil War law that they are claiming exonerates them of liability.

So?

According to the Weather Channel the states with the most frequent hurricane landfalls are:
1. FL
2. TX
3. NC - This one surprises me. I'd been thinking that it was a bit of a fluke that we'd been slammed so much the past few years.

Damn, now they saying at least 20 barges loose and much more severe damage.

https://www.pnj.com/story/news/2020/09/ ... 857987002/
Now it's up to 28 barges loose or sunk and at least 6 months to make repairs.
Yet after promises to monitor all barges, another broke loose a few days ago. Construction company had no idea when or how.
The report came from the property owners who found a barge had grounded
on their property causing damages to their seawall.
Update: Bridge still closed. 5 minute drive from Gulf Breeze to Pensacola still 2 hours on a 2 lane road filled with flashing lights warning that the 55 mph speed limit is radar enforced and demanding that traffic SLOW DOWN NOW, even as I sit stopped in traffic hoping that I'll be able to get back to the usual top speed of 7.

Now they're projecting around Memorial Day for opening.

Little is being said, but it appears that the reason they had 30 barges instead of the usual 5 or 10 was that they had been caught dumping debris from the demolition of the old bridges into the bay and were being forced to clean it up.

Speaking of crazy, it's already begun in 2021:
Super Typhoon Surigae rapidly intensifies to a Cat. 5 near Philippines

... Driving this news: The number of high-end tropical cyclones is increasing as the world continues to warm.

Projections show that future Atlantic hurricane seasons, for example, could bring a greater proportion of Category 4 and 5 storms, though it's not yet clear if the total number of storms will increase.

There is evidence, including from the record 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, that more storms in the North Atlantic Ocean basin are undergoing rapid intensification, which can be extremely dangerous if the intensity ramps up near land.

Super Typhoons like Surigae feed off warm ocean waters and humid air masses, both of which are increasingly abundant as sea and air temperatures warm in response to human-caused global warming.

The bottom line: Super Typhoon Surigae will pass east of the Philippines on Sunday, and be close enough to bring dangerously high surf, heavy rain and gusty winds to eastern and northeastern portions of the country, including the eastern Visayas.

I believe we started tying them down after Ivan lifted and removed sections of decking on the I-10 bridge. It's those damn ghost barges that worry me more than a hurricane.

Weird All the news yesterday was that the bridge would be open before the end of next week - this morning just repeats from yesterday until 11. At 11 the local news announced that the bridge opened at 6 am.

It's barge liberation season!

Potential Claudette

Weird, the Forecast shows LA getting hit, but the Satellite shows you getting all of the TS action. Good luck. We'll be getting the rain Monday. As usual, thanks a lot.

Barges okay? How much rain and wind? A little rain here, mostly shifted east of us.
https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/ ... -claudette
12 dead in Alabama due to Claudette, including 10 children

Tropical Depression Claudette claimed 12 lives in Alabama as the storm swept across the southeastern U.S., causing flash flooding and spurring tornadoes that destroyed dozens of homes.

Ten people, including nine children, were killed Saturday in a fiery multi-vehicle crash about 35 miles (55 kilometers) south of Montgomery on Interstate 65, according to Butler County Coroner Wayne Garlock.

He said the vehicles likely hydroplaned on wet roads, with eight children, ages 4 to 17, killed in a van belonging to a youth ranch for abused or neglected children operated by the Alabama Sheriffs Association....

So I'm sorry for the tragedy of those people getting killed, but it wasn't Claudette's fault. It was a traffic accident cause by any combination of some or all of: too fast driving, not paying attention, unskilled driver, no kids in seat belts, shouldn't have been out driving in the flooding, yada.

Right or wrong, storm MVC deaths always get counted as storm deaths. Ironically, seat belts MAY have contributed to some of their deaths.
The van caught fire after the wreck.
Otoh, "too fast driving, not paying attention, unskilled driver ... shouldn't have been out driving in the flooding" could all apply.
... the location of the wreck is “notorious" for hydroplaning, as the northbound highway curves down a hill to a small creek.
Abused or neglected children under the care of sheriffs should have extra protection.

Bingo, but we gotta blame something. Of course it didn't have anything to do with the large trucks that the sheriff allows to drive 90 through Butler County.
I've driven I-65 between 5 and 15 times a year since 69. Storms aren't nearly as scary as the aggressive speeding big trucks.
