Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Just herd thinning at this point.
By enough to alter election results?
Not by deaths, but possibly by sick and infected when they realize they've been had by the Republican leaders and deniers as there's still 17 months until the mid terms.

Hell, in another 17 months, we'll be up to covid variants of Mike, November, Oscar, and Papa. Possibly even into Victor and Whiskey.

Zulu variant?

Philippines' Duterte warns he'll jail people who refuse the COVID-19 vaccine

Well, that's one solution. However, if you're going to go that extreme, wouldn't it be cheaper, less abusive and better for public health to just hold them down and give them the shot? Jails are petri dishes.

I like it!
Maybe Duarte thinks that to kind and it's not authoritive enough unless there's jail or somebody getting flogged or killed.

Yeppers. Darwin award honorable mention.
They live in a state with one of the highest incident rates and where their employer isn't allowed by law to help reduce the risk. They work in an office without masks or (probably) re-positioned seating. The more easily transmitted version of virus is becoming dominant. Vaccines have been available to them for more than a couple of months. Idiots. The world is better off without them.

There ought to be a special category of "Florida Man" for those people.

I'm still not hot and bothered to go to an indoor setting to watch live music with drinking and such.

I'm still iffy on indoor dining.
I don't do much of either, regardless, but I have confidence in the vaccines. They either prevent infection or drastically reduce its severity surprisingly well.
On the upside, herd thinning will commence for the unvaccinated who do go.
 Rare breakthrough infections among the vaccinated are being reported. I think they should report serious illness and deaths among the unvaccinated, but they won't.
Looks like I'm wrong, sometimes.
Coronavirus outbreak killed two at Florida office, official says; a vaccinated employee was not infected

A coronavirus outbreak at a Florida government building killed two people and hospitalized several others who were unvaccinated against the virus, a county official said.

The Manatee County Administration Building reopened Monday after the virus that causes covid-19 spread throughout the county's IT department and forced the building to shut down last Friday. Manatee County Administrator Scott Hopes, an epidemiologist, said six unvaccinated employees, including five in the IT department, tested positive for the virus within a two-week period.

The two IT employees who died last week were identified in local media and obituaries as Mary Knight, 58, and Alphonso Cox, 53.

Hopes said that the one IT employee, 23, exposed to the virus who was vaccinated did not get infected.

"This particular outbreak demonstrates the effectiveness, I believe, with the vaccine," he said to reporters Monday. "All of the cases were non-vaccinated." He added in a news release, "Individual employees in the IT Department who were known to be fully vaccinated and who were in close proximity of those who were infected did not contract covid-19."

Despite the outbreak, masks will remain optional for staffers returning this week, with unvaccinated workers being "encouraged but not required, to follow covid-19 prevention measures."
Of course, it's FL. Let Darwin sort them out.
... The Manatee Board of County Commissioners repealed covid safety requirements last month and strongly recommended that people visiting the County Administration Building "use their best judgment" to protect themselves from a potential spread of the virus.
Hah, as I just said.
Then, covid spread throughout the IT department, killing and hospitalizing staffers. When the second employee died Thursday, the decision was made to shut down the building the next day so it could be disinfected.
:bs: People are the problem, not the building.
"When you have that many cases, and you have a 40 percent fatality rate, you have to worry," Hopes said to Florida Politics. "I would prefer not to have any more employee funerals."

Yet the county announced over the weekend that "face masks will be optional for the public and employees inside the facility."

"Visitors and employees who are fully vaccinated may return to work as usual," Hopes said in a news release. "Unvaccinated individuals are encouraged, but not required, to follow covid-19 prevention measures, including use of N95 or equivalent masks, which will be available at each entrance, and social distancing." ...
Yup, Florida. I'm not sure that DeSantis would let Manatee County be more stringent if it wanted to be. Might not matter, it's pretty solidly Repug.

Hard numbers put to something we already know:
Nearly all COVID deaths in US are now among unvaccinated

Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. now are in people who weren’t vaccinated, a staggering demonstration of how effective the shots have been and an indication that deaths per day — now down to under 300 — could be practically zero if everyone eligible got the vaccine.

An Associated Press analysis of available government data from May shows that “breakthrough” infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations. That’s about 0.1%.

And only about 150 of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths in May were in fully vaccinated people. That translates to about 0.8%, or five deaths per day on average....

Earlier this month, Andy Slavitt, a former adviser to the Biden administration on COVID-19, suggested that 98% to 99% of the Americans dying of the coronavirus are unvaccinated.

And CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said on Tuesday that the vaccine is so effective that "nearly every death, especially among adults, due to COVID-19, is, at this point, entirely preventable.” She called such deaths “particularly tragic.”

Deaths in the U.S. have plummeted from a peak of more than 3,400 day on average in mid-January, one month into the vaccination drive.

About 63% of all vaccine-eligible Americans — those 12 and older — have received at least one dose, and 53% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. While vaccine remains scarce in much of the world, the U.S. supply is so abundant and demand has slumped so dramatically that shots sit unused....

The preventable deaths will continue, experts predict, with unvaccinated pockets of the nation experiencing outbreaks in the fall and winter. Ali Mokdad, a professor of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, said modeling suggests the nation will hit 1,000 deaths per day again next year.

In Arkansas, which has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the nation, with only about 33% of the population fully protected, cases, hospitalizations and deaths are rising....

(Ross) Bagne, who lived alone, ran a business helping people incorporate their companies in Wyoming for the tax advantages. He was winding down the business, planning to retire, when he got sick, emailing his sister in April about an illness that had left him dizzy and disoriented.

“Whatever it was. That bug took a LOT out of me,” he wrote.

As his health deteriorated, a neighbor finally persuaded him to go to the hospital.

“Why was the messaging in his state so unclear that he didn’t understand the importance of the vaccine? He was a very bright guy," his sister said. “I wish he’d gotten the vaccine, and I’m sad he didn’t understand how it could prevent him from getting COVID."
:bs: :bs: :bs: Even in the worst state the messaging has been sufficient. He CHOSE to ignore it.

Shout out to science, industry, govt, and healthcare pros and volunteers. In record time they developed, produced and delivered hundreds of millions of doses of safe and effective vaccines.

"NC State baseball coach Elliott Avent (likely a MAGAt trumper) said it wasn't his place to tell his players to get vaccinated."

But he later emphasized that it is his place to set curfews and bedtimes, as well as restrictions on alcohol and should be team travel overseas he would require them to get any required shots as long as it isn't a covid vaccine.

He further stated, "I don’t try to indoctrinate my kids with my values or my opinions."

Great coaches often do. How many stories have you heard from people who say something like, "my <insert sport> coach was my biggest influence in school, and made me the person I am" or "Thank you for this award. I'd like to thank my coach who gave me the values of hard work, dedication, and persistence..." or whatever.
