I dunno, man. You may have thought you had spare motors but by now it's more likely two pile of scrap metal. Were they for your Plymouth?Ulysses wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:06 pmI've had a couple spare motors sitting my garage/carport for at least 15 years. Oh, I'm pretty sure they are rebuildable. But I doubt any of the car motors could run at the moment. I know the bike motor ran OK when I pulled it.O Really wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:33 pmI dunno, man. You may have thought you had spare motors but by now it's more likely two pile of scrap metal. Just went out to do a count. I have three car motors and one bike:
1950 era Plymouth in-line six, flat head, 218 ci
1960's era Plymouth/Dodge 225 ci slant six
1960's and later era Chevy 350 V8
1983 Kawasaki 550 cc inline four
And I have a big workshop where I could do most of the disassembly, but I'd have to take the blocks, heads, etc to an auto machine shop for boring/facing/etc. When I get a round toit.

You can still get parts for the 350. Rebuild that one and stuff it into your van. Finding a use/market for the other two might, IMNVHO, be a bit of a challenge.

Re: The car thread ...
Well, not really. But once the LS1 engine in my Camaro dies (born January 1999, now with 192K miles) you can have first chance at it. They are relatively rare and sell for around $2K on ebay. Just two weeks ago I had the spark plugs and plug wires replaced. Cost $535, the vast majority of that for labor; it's an 8 hour job because of the way the engine sits. But after the new plugs and wires it runs like a cat on fire.Ulysses wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:06 pmI've had a couple spare motors sitting my garage/carport for at least 15 years. Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full. Except this one is missing the air filter box that should be in front of whatever the hell that is. And do you see any spark plugs? They are elusive.

Re: The car thread ...
Well, the 283 in the Chevy Van works just fine (after I corrected the valve clearances, which was within a few months of when I bought it for a song about 13 years ago). I acquired the 350, because, well, it was there. And there is a slight advantage to the 283, I think. Having shorter piston throws it could be made to run at a higher rpm than the 350 with its longer stroke. Not that the van really needs more power anyway.
The other two, I have target vehicles for: a 64 Plymouth with a cracked block, and a spare 50 Plymouth with an motor that was tough to turn over by hand. I have NO idea if and when I'll get around to rebuilding those. I had imagined that I'd be doing it in my retirement... starting to look less likely every year.

Cool. I always wanted to have one of those old early 50's Mercury coupes and have the roof chopped. Those things are awesome. Like a real life version of a cartoon gangster car. All black with a gimmick that will make fire come out of the dual exhaust pipes at night. People would say "there goes that fucking neoplacebo"O Really wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 10:24 amReally good gallery of '50's rods, restorations, and customs here:

The ones who don't know me generally call the cops, who find nothing amiss when they arrive.

Interesting:
Analysis: When do electric vehicles become cleaner than gasoline cars?
It depends on several variables, largely on how your local electricity is generated.

Truck stuck after LaSalle County bridge collapse amid flash flooding, Seneca police say
Chicago weather: Seneca area saw 3 to 6 inches of rain
... Some good Samaritans pulled the truck driver, a LaSalle County worker, from the car to safety, according to Seneca police.
"Driver was very lucky that his vehicle didn't go into the creek," Seneca police Officer Kelsey Kowalski said. "He was uninjured; he seemed fine, a little shook up." ...

He went out the door? I would have gone out the window to the roof and hood, or out the rear window to the bed and road.

Well, Hell. No show-worthy Merc for me this summer. SIL's shop has a bunch of high-paying work in and since the Merc is a rebuild-and-sell project, it's not a top priority. It's driveable, but looks like crap with the paint and chrome all off. On a better note, though, their '93 Corvette ZR-1 needs its regular exercise, but I was looking forward to cruising in something 50's old. We'll see.O Really wrote: ↑Sat Mar 13, 2021 11:04 pmSo this should be fun. I may have mentioned that son-in-law took a buy-out from Boeing back in the recession and opened a custom/restoration car shop. Anyway, he's got a customer that he's done a good bit of work for who needed to reduce his collection a bit and in exchange for some other work gave him a 50 Mercury about half way through it's second (or maybe third) renovation. It's been chopped and dropped, has a 305 V8 4bbl. Updated suspension, brakes and steering. It looks a bit rough and has been driven hard from time to time, but is street legal and driveable as it sits. Anyway, so SIL is bringing it back as a personal project for eventual sale but it should be pretty nice by the time we get up there this summer and has been offered to Lady O and me to cruise around in for fun. If the Goodguys show happens this year, we'll take it over there. If not, we'll do Friday night drive-in street cruises. It may not have been my first choice for a summer hot rod to play with, but it's not bad.
