I'm convinced. I'm going to copyright "Atlanta Uncle Billies", "Atlanta Shermans", "Atlanta Fire" and "Atlanta Burning" . . . just in case.

Re: Baseball
"Atlanta Fire" is pretty good. Sounds more like a soccer team, though.
Oh yeah:
"Chicago’s Major League Soccer (MLS) team exploded onto the scene in 1998, named in honor of the Great Chicago Fire. Since that time, the team won the MLS Cup Championship in its debut year, and has taken home the U.S. Open Cup an astounding four times. The Chicago Fire play at SeatGeek Stadium in suburban Bridgeview through 2019. Currently, they’re looking to relocate to a stadium closer to downtown Chicago"

Re: Baseball
Yeah, baseball and something as lively as fire don't really go together.
Maybe modernizing the historical reference with the "Atlanta Kings" would piss slightly fewer people off. Doubt that Sacramento would mind. Bet someone has already thought of it, though.
How about honoring the Centennial Olympic Park bombing hero, the "Atlanta Jewells". Richard Jewell is dead, but still due compensation for the false implications against him. Jewells is unique and sounds cool, too.
The "Atlanta Turners" would be a nod to magnate and former owner Ted, but it's probably been thought of and the young would endlessly ask, "What are they turning?"
Best of all, the "Atlanta Good Trouble".

Re: Baseball
Yeah, I know. But my question was really about why we have to have historically "meaningful" names. Sure, the Packers came from the packing industry, backbone of Green Bay back when, and the 49ers relate to a historical event, but if there's not something immediately and clearly apropos, then let's go with the fun and meaningless. Rooting for the Cubbies or da Bears is a lot more fun than, say, the "Slaughterers"

If the Braves name is an issue, they should have thought of that when they stole them from Milwaukee.

Re: Baseball
Seems like SF and Oakland are safe for now. Although the lobby for oversized ogres might protest the Giants name. And the Union of Associated Jocks might have a problem with the Athletics team name. But that could soon be Las Vegas' problem anyway.

Sure, the "Giants" name is fraught with sizeism, and surely isn't "body positive." Could they have gotten by this long if the team had been named "Midgets" or "Dwarfs"?

Re: Baseball
Of course you mean "A's Fan", right?
Well, the only insignia-ed baseball cap I usually wear is an A's logo. But I do also have a Giants cap, if that's what the "SF" in big red letters means. So, I will root for both, unless they are playing each other in one of the Bay Bridge series, and then I'll be on the side of the A's. And who can forget the Loma Prieta series? I was about to watch that game, in my garage ready to work on a motorcycle, with the radio on. Oops. Big shake. No damage where I was, but all hell broke loose all over the Bay area after that.
I'm guessing the Giants/A's duopoly is sort of like the Yankees/Mets. Or what the Yankees/Brooklyn Dodgers used to be.
We generally don't talk about the Giants football team around here.

Re: Baseball
OK, I have a black hat with an intertwined orange-red "SF" on the front. The tag inside says, "Official Licensee Major League Baseball".
It's clearly an SF Giants hat.
So there.
