Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Director of Vaccine Education Center: 'The governor of Florida has served as a friend of SARS-CoV-2 virus'

Dr. Paul Offit, Director of the Vaccine Education Center and attending physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, joins Yahoo Finance to discuss the latest in COVID-19 and the spread of the Delta variant....

PAUL OFFIT: It's inexplicable. I mean, you have basically the governor of Florida has served as a friend of Sars-CoV-2 virus. I mean, for children less than 12 years of age, the only chance they have of avoiding this virus is to mask. That's it. Vaccines aren't available for them. And yet, the governor has put children in a position where they may not go into a classroom where there's masking. I was actually just on this NPR 1A program earlier today. And a nine-year-old called in from Florida and said she was scared. She knew that she couldn't be vaccinated, she knew that she could only mask, and she was hoping that all her friends would also mask.

I mean, you're listening to her talk, you would like to see her run for the governor of Florida. Because she seems to understand the concept of masking much better than he does. It just doesn't make sense. It's sort of like civil liberties uber alles, including above public health. It just puts children in a dangerous position unnecessarily....
Even governors need friends.
Which actually brings up a valid point that hasn't been talked about. All the Karen Covidiots are screaming about the psychological damage by making kids wear masks.
What about possible traumatized kids who are actually aware of the world around them being made to possibly go into a covid factory on a daily basis?
I'm just starting to hear/see it mentioned - kids afraid of their unmasked peers. :(

Of course, COVIDiots don't give a shit, about their own kids or anyone else's. Only their dogma matters.

I can guess an answer to your question in general, though not the locales. With 50% of the state being RepuQ DeSantis and the Leg RepuQs are playing to the wingnutty 75% of those FL RepuQs. Then, DeSantis is playing to national RepuQs, and all of them are playing to state and national funders. Primaries first, worry about the generals later.

That does beg another question. Why are uber-rich RepuQs, people likely to have some minimal competence, so smitten with supporting clear scientific stupidity? Where's the upside to it when their money can go wherever they want it to?

'Zactly. I understand the (formerly) normal partisan leaning, and in a given year if both candidates are decent or both candidates are shady, you pick the one with your preferred letter beside their name. And even if your guy is clearly worse than the other guy, you might vote for him anyway because politics is a team sport. But back in the day, there were limits to which team spirit worked. Dems and Republicans have turned against their guy for offences real and imagined that were far less egregious than actively attempting to prevent citizens from protecting themselves, their families, and their employees from serious harm. Partisanship notwithstanding, how does anybody think DeInsanity is doing a good thing? Wouldn't a real "conservative" be howling for more local control? Wouldn't they rail against damgummint overreach in statewide mandates (for or against masks), and insist on their own towns and schools making the decisions? There's really no ideological difference in saying "everybody has to wear a mask" and "nobody can require masks."

The irony of Republicans is lost on them. Desantis was screaming about federal government overreach as he was doing precisely the same thing to his citizenry by taking away local control and putting peoples health in danger at the same time.

Fuck that guy. I am in total control of what happens within my walls. Sometimes I even answer the phone by saying "control room." Callers that don't know me or who lack any semblance of control hang up immediately.

You're absolutely right. We've taken that attitude/approach since covid began - and actually before, although we did used to have more sense of societal community. Now not so much.

A metaphor for 2021:

A 21-year-old mother was shot in the head by her toddler and killed during a work Zoom call.

The only thing that can stop a bad toddler with a gun is a good toddler with a gun.

... The statues were meant to be placed in front of the Escambia County Sheriff's Office main headquarters....
So, where are they? Prospective vandals want to know.

Edit:
Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons calls David Morgan statue 'waste of money'

... In documents obtained by Channel 3, the plan was to have a statue of former Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan, displayed at the memorial in front of the Sheriff's Office.

But current Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons says that's not going to happen.

"I have no intention of putting the statue of the former sheriff in front of this building or anywhere in this building," Simmons said....

"You don't typically make a statue of yourself, and have the taxpayers pay for it," Simmons added. "I think it's a bit of a waste of money. That's why I tried to cancel it whenever I first found it. I think it's a bit brash. I think it has an air of narcissist to it."

... As for the recreation of former Sheriff Morgan, it's being held in storage for now....

"Maybe we can melt it down and make use of it. But at this point that statue is not going to be erected here at the Escambia Co. Sheriff's Office," Simmons said....

There's so much more story here, or maybe not.
Was she doing her Godiva impression to bring justice to the situation between the police and the gunmen, or was she just another tourist riding around naked in a golf cart?
Whadya mean ya can't do that, this is Florida.

:D Teen, cops, armed standoff, booze, golf cart Lady Godiva, Florida - it's got all the elements needed for a TV movie.

Even the shoplifters are weird in Florida:

South Florida thieves steal teeth whitening strips & Rogaine in statewide crime spree

They don't need the Rogaine. Too bad they aren't smiling.

In Florida, where else?

Man accused in co-worker deaths tells deputies he was raped

Very bizarre. And very sad.
DAVENPORT, Fla. (AP) — An electrician accused of killing three co-workers on assignment in central Florida told detectives he did it because his colleagues had raped him, but a Florida sheriff on Monday said there was no evidence to support the claim.

Shaun Runyon, 39, confessed multiple times to the murders during interviews with detectives, telling them that the co-workers had raped him, and “he hated all three of them," but a sexual battery test failed to confirm the allegation, said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd during a news conference.

The sheriff used hand air quotes when saying the word “raped."

“I want to underscore there is absolutely unequivocally zero evidence," said Judd, whose county is located between Tampa and Orlando.

Besides being inexplicable and obscene why is she only suing for $30,000?
