In Florida, where else?

Man accused in co-worker deaths tells deputies he was raped

Very bizarre. And very sad.

Where else indeed:
2 teachers face charges from entering wrong home, shooting

Two newly hired physical education teachers at a Florida elementary school were arrested after the shooting of a man whose apartment they entered thinking it belonged to someone else following a night of drinking.

One of the teachers mistakenly climbed into bed with the man, his wife and their baby, and the other teacher went to the bathroom before the male occupant of the house escorted them out. The teachers believed they had entered the apartment of one of their friends.

While outside, one of the teachers, Darius Cohen, got into a scuffle with the male occupant, which was broken up by the other teacher, Akkua Hallback. While the male resident was returning to his apartment, Cohen chased him and fired four shots, striking him once in the back, according to an arrest affidavit. The man's injuries were not life threatening....

:D That always turns out well, though standing at all is a minor accomplishment.

Florida's top doctor refuses mask, is told to leave meeting

Florida's top health official was asked to leave a meeting after refusing to wear a mask at the office of a state senator who told him she had a serious medical condition, officials have confirmed.

Florida Senate leader Wilton Simpson, a Republican, sent a memo to senators Saturday regarding the incident at the office of Democratic state Sen. Tina Polsky, asking visitors at the building to be respectful with social interactions. Polsky, who represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, had not yet made public her breast cancer diagnosis.
Kudos to Repub Simpson for standing up for Dem Polsky.
... “It was so shocking to me that he treated me in this manner,” Polsky said. “If he is a surgeon general for the next several years, I am really concerned about a future public health emergency and not being able to rely on him for necessary guidance and proper scientific leadership.”

Ladapo offered to go outside, but the senator said she did not want to sit on the metal picnic tables on a warm day when her office was nice and spacious. She said she asked whether there was a reason why he couldn't wear a mask, but he wouldn't answer....

A day into his job, Ladapo signed new rules allowing parents to decide whether their children should quarantine or stay in school after being exposed to people who tested positive for COVID-19.

On Thursday at a press conference with DeSantis to oppose vaccine mandates, Ladapo said people were not comfortable with the vaccines because the federal government has not been open about the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines, saying there was a “concerted effort” to hide stories of people with adverse reactions....

Ladapo also wrote an opinion column in the Wall Street Journal saying masks have “little or no effect on respiratory virus transmission.”
... In the memo sent by Simpson, the president of the Florida senate, he said that while there's no mask mandate in the Senate, senators can request social distancing and masking within their offices.

“It shouldn't take a cancer diagnosis for people to respect each other's level of comfort with social interactions during a pandemic,” he said. "What occurred in Senator Polsky's office was unprofessional and will not be tolerated in the Senate."
Again, kudos. Finally, a reason to respect a Florida Repub.

Wiki:
Joseph Ladapo

Joseph Ladapo is the Surgeon General of Florida.

Ladapo was appointed as Surgeon General of Florida on September 21, 2021 by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Ladapo had been a vocal supporter of DeSantis's COVID-19 policies. He has a history of promoting unproven treatments against COVID-19, opposes COVID-19 vaccine requirements, has questioned the safety of COVID-19 vaccines, and has associated with America's Frontline Doctors, a pro-Trump healthcare group known for promoting falsehoods about the pandemic. Asked in September 2021 whether he believed that state should promote vaccines, Ladapo said instead that states should promote "good health" and said that vaccines have "been treated almost like a religion. It's just senseless."

In October 2021, he refused to wear a mask while in a meeting with state senator Tina Polsky, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was set to undergo radiation therapy.

Ladapo has worked as a researcher at UCLA, as well as been on the faculty of the the Department of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine. He has a medical degree and a PhD from Harvard Medical School.
Med school and a PhD are nothing to sneeze at, but it sounds like Ladapo had no residency, no patient care and no management or public policy experience. It seems that DeSantis picked him for his fringe COVID-19 views and his being a Trumpette.

You may be correct, but I don't necessarily get that from Wiki. Idk if med school is sufficient or if one also needs to complete a residency.

Q: What do you call a person that graduates at the bottom of their med school class?

Residency and I'd think (guessing here) you'd have to sit for board exams and such before you become licensed.

It looks like you're right.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physician ... physicians
... After completion of medical school, physicians complete a residency in the specialty in which they will practice. Subspecialties require the completion of a fellowship after residency. Both MD and DO physicians participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and attend ACGME-accredited residencies and fellowships across all medical specialties to obtain licensure.

All boards of certification now require that physicians demonstrate, by examination, continuing mastery of the core knowledge and skills for a chosen specialty. Recertification varies by particular specialty between every seven and every ten years.
I wonder how many surgeons general have not been licensed?

So DeSantis wants to pay a $5,000 bonus to out of state cops who relocate to Florida, and waxes eloquently about how awful it is that people could lose their jobs over a "personal decision" of a shot. How sad.

Hey, Guv - how do you feel about the "personal decision" to smoke a little pot? Should a Florida employee lose their job over that? And as job protection, how do you feel about the "employment at will" provisions? And unions? How about the "personal decision" to refuse to wear required safety gear?

Idiot. Asshole.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2 ... s-lawsuit/

"University of Florida bars faculty members from testifying in voting rights lawsuit against DeSantis administration"

"The University of Florida barred three faculty members from testifying for plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging a voting-restrictions law enthusiastically embraced by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), which activists say makes it harder for racial minorities to vote. The school’s move raises sharp concerns about academic freedom and free speech in the state."

"The public university said the three faculty members — political scientists Daniel A. Smith, Michael McDonald and Sharon Wright Austin — could present “a conflict of interest to the executive branch” and harm the school’s interests by testifying against the law signed by DeSantis in May.
“As UF is a state actor, litigation against the state is adverse to UF’s interests,” school officials said, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post."

"The move to bar professors from being expert witnesses in public trials is highly unusual."

As further proof of the right wing position that all public universities are bastions of liberalism.

"As Florida’s governor, DeSantis has influence over the funding of the state’s public institutions of higher education. He also has the authority to name six of the 13 members of the university’s board of trustees. All appointed trustees are subject to state"

Could be, but I'd bet that DeSantis weighed in covertly. It's a big deal for a U to gag profs.

Of course he did.
Seems way more than a big deal - anyway, I hope it is for those who threatened teacher's jobs. I've never heard of anything like this.

I remember Wallace threatening Auburn many times with withholding school funds because of professors speaking out, but no memories of the university threatening them.

This is why we have tenure. I hope this bunch has it.

If it matters. Could a RepuQ led committee disallow testimony from a prof that has been barred by a state U?

I seem to recall something similar happening at UC Berkeley back in the 60's. Years of demonstrations and campus riots ensued. The free speech movement (FSM) was created. Governor Ronald Reagan was elected. Later, President Ronald Reagan. Then we got Governor Jerry Brown, and now Governor Gavin Newsom. Time for the rest of the nation to catch up to California, yet again.

Ummm, the Free Speech Movement was not about free speech for profs. Time for you to catch up with reality.

Btw, you're welcome for the earlier support. Funny that you didn't whine about that supposedly ignored post. Busted.

Probably my bad, but I'm not seeing what bird Jeff Brandes, state senator, would prefer to the mockingbird.

Personally, I think that the mangrove cuckoo better captures the spirit of Florida Man.
