Latest news in California is that Governor Newsom and/or the legislature is re-imposing mask requirements across the board.

As I recall from the news stories, the mask mandate was lifted around last June, altough many private entities (like Costco and Safeway) maintained a mask requirement for all customers. So from my point of view, nothing much will change. Presumably the mask mandate will continue to be for indoor settings only, although I have heard some outdoor accomodations may be requiring masks.

I've not seen talk or data on this but is it possible that if enough covidiots get infected with a highly transmissible variant might it be possible to actually achieve herd immunity and turn a real corner on this thing?

Yes, eventually, after lots of deaths and depending on the mutation characteristics.

It's also possible that the dominant strain/s become less deadly, like the common cold or flu, and COVID becomes endemic rather than eradicated.

Probably not. Because as soon as we think we are safe, Covid goes and mutates again. It's sort of a coronavirus feature, you see. The corona makes it relatively easy for the virus to change its spots, so to speak, and evade immunity.

There may be some advanced solutions being investigated but I wouldn't count on anything soon. Hope I'm wrong there. This pandemic is sort of ruining my retirement.

:) Faux Noise, pretty much covers everything I posted yesterday:
Omicron variant may hasten pace for COVID-19 to become endemic, ‘ideal situation for a virus’

Some health officials have expressed reserved optimism that the coronavirus omicron strain could be a significant step in the pandemic's transition to becoming endemic, with one expert calling initial studies "the ideal situation for a virus."

Dr. Adam Koppel, the managing director of Bain Capital Life Sciences, told the Massachusetts High Technology panel on Tuesday that if the projections are true and omicron becomes the dominant global strain, it will "enable us to more quickly get to an endemic state as opposed to a pandemic state where we can live more regularly with the virus more similar to the flu than what COVID has looked like," the Boston Herald reported.

Scientists studying the variant have stressed that there is still much to be learned about the new variant. They say they are troubled by its transmissibility and insist that we still do not have a clear picture as to why it appears less severe than, say, delta. It may be infecting younger, healthier individuals. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong seemed to support earlier studies in South Africa that found the variant highly contagious, but less severe.

They found that the variant infects people about 70 times faster than earlier strains but replicated less efficiently—about 10 times lower in lung tissue, Bloomberg reported. The report said that early indicators say most of those infected don’t need oxygen nor do they require ICU care. But the sheer amount of cases could still put serious pressure on hospitals....

"By infecting many more people, a very infectious virus may cause more severe disease and death even though the virus itself may be less pathogenic," the lead author in the Hong Kong study said, according to Bloomberg....

I guess that they are separate attributes of the virus. We can keep watch for further explication.

A virus doesn't care if anyone is confused. It just wants to replicate as much as possible. And even that is a stretch. A virus has no thoughts or emotions. It just is.

I saw a news item that claims the Omicron variant, while it is much less able to infect lung tissue, it is much more able to infect bronchial tissue. The bronchi are the two large tubes that carry air from your windpipe to your lungs. Apparently evidence is still being gathered on how this may affect the future path of this variant. And don't forget, it can always mutate into something worse. On the plus side, if it kills too quickly, it will have less chance to thrive and multiply.

Looks like it's a function of where the virus likes to live:
Omicron thrives in airways, not lungs; new data on asymptomatic cases

... Compared to the earlier Delta variant, Omicron multiplies itself 70 times more quickly in tissues that line airway passages, which may facilitate person-to-person spread, they said. But in lung tissues, Omicron replicates 10 times more slowly than the original version of the coronavirus, which might contribute to less-severe illness....
This appears to be for all strains:
Four in 10 infected people may unknowingly spread virus

Infected people who show no symptoms might be contributing significantly to transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, given that they account for 40.5% of confirmed infections worldwide, according to a study published online Tuesday in the journal JAMA Network Open.

The researchers pooled data from 77 earlier studies involving a total of 19,884 individuals with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections. They found that among infected people in the general community, about 40% were asymptomatic, as were 54% of infected pregnant women, 53% of infected air or cruise travelers, 48% of infected nursing home residents or staff and 30% of infected healthcare workers or hospitalized patients....

But it's actually an example of evolution in action. This whole thing only started less than two years ago. It's spread around the world (our fault) and has mutated several times during that period. It will continue to mutate until it dies out altogether or becomes some kind of certain death no chance version. Or it could be god saying he wants us to die. You got your global climate crisis on the little hand and your little virus crisis on the big hand. And I suspect we're all pigs looking at clocks.

Like I said, "A virus doesn't care if anyone is confused. It just wants to replicate as much as possible. And even that is a stretch. A virus has no thoughts or emotions. It just is."

And what it more or less boils down to, is we are all just the products of chemical reactions. In that respect, we have our existence in common with viruses. Sort of puts a new spin on the old slogan, "Better Living Through Chemistry".
