The Food Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Make this "pulled" banana peel recipe: Nadiya Hussain on Good Morning Britain!

Yum!

Think how many millions of tons of edible peel has been wasted over the centuries. :problem:
That worked so well as a “pulled banana” burger, I decided to tweak it.

Pork ribs with an equal volume of washed “pulled" banana peels slow cooked together in foil for several hours. Removed from foil, meat chopped, onion, garlic and BBQ sauce added, cooked on high for a bit.

Double Yum!
Does it get you high?

Gonna pick up a couple of sandwiches to take along on today's excursion. This is one of my favourites.

But now I'm filled with angst and guilt because it's described as:
Turkey Breast, Cream Cheese, Roasted Unsalted Sunflower Seeds on Squaw Bread. Includes Mayo, Tomato, Lettuce & Sprouts.
Am I required to give up this particular sandwich, or must I boycott one of the best sandwich shops in SD? Suppose I just ordered the sandwich on some other kind of bread?

They say:
Everything we make is created in house, from scratch, like your great-grandmother used to make. We work directly with local farmers and purveyors to source the highest quality hormone free, organic when possible, sustainably farmed, meats, dairy and produce so your taste buds and your soul are satisfied.
Is all that nullified by the casual use of a term that some have found offensive?

Is the "Left Coast Pastrami" too political?
Image
Hot Pastrami with Grilled Onions, Dijon Mustard, Pepperoncini Peppers & Melted Swiss Cheese on a toasted French Baguette.
Too much stress. Oh what oh what to do?

Had to lookup the description. We definitely need more info on the origins, but it seems to me that they could come up with a new moniker.
Turkey Breast, Cream Cheese, Roasted Unsalted Sunflower Seeds on Squaw Bread. Includes Mayo, Tomato, Lettuce & Sprouts
Could care less about "left coast Pastrami ", it looks and sounds tasty.

Go fer it!

Of course not, silly. That only works with smoked banana peels, which are best with smoked pork.

I never smoked any pork. Seems it would be hard to get it dry enough to light properly.

You should be.

because it's described as:
Turkey Breast, Cream Cheese, Roasted Unsalted Sunflower Seeds on Squaw Bread. Includes Mayo, Tomato, Lettuce & Sprouts.
Am I required to give up this particular sandwich,

Yes. Would you purchase nigger bread?

or must I boycott one of the best sandwich shops in SD?

Maybe, depends on their response to your complaint

Suppose I just ordered the sandwich on some other kind of bread?

Acceptable.

"some"? No soul should be satisfied with bigotry. Tell us about your great-grandmother.

Is the "Left Coast Pastrami" too political?

Only if you're a con.

Too much stress. Oh what oh what to do?

Let the internet be your conscience, of course.
I'm surprised that it's even a question in your family.
The English word squaw is an ethnic and sexual slur, historically used for Indigenous North American women. Contemporary use of the term, especially by non-Natives, is considered offensive, derogatory, misogynist, and racist.
Lady O is a strong woman who is known across the country for savaging ( ;) ) Texas park rangers that dis Indians. Did you ask her before ordering?

It might be that O Really is messing with us. This restaurant in Riverside, California dumped its squaw bread, which was invented by Germans (of course), in 2015 after piles of complaints. Its menu shows "Prairie Bread", instead.

Yeah, but this is the restaurant he was referring to.
It's still there.

The California Delight.

Ah, thanks. Riverside isn't where I thought it was. I would guess that it's received the same years of complaints that the Backstreet Restaurant once got, and have decided to tell the anti-bigots to fuck off. Maybe they should change their name to California DeWhite.

The restaurant in the article is different from where we go, which is indeed the Board and Brew in Carlsbad. "Squaw bread" isn't a propriatary name.
Anyway, the sandwich was excellent, the bread was fresh and delicious, and they can call it anything they want as long as they keep serving it. Except Trump Bread.

Once in a while I'll go to the Costco Business Center in a neighboring town, and pick up some of their deli-style sammies. Like Philly Cheese Steak. Not bad.

Any of the WNC people ever try the Hero at the Flat Rock Village Bakery.

So good.

Italian Hero
loaded with ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, mayo, roasted red peppers, organic greens, red onion, mustard, mayo and oil and vinegar on ciabatta.

https://www.villagebakerync.com/flat-rock-menu

Their ciabatta kicks ass.
Thing was to die for.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot . . . unless 'ciabatta' is Italian for 'squaw', 'nigger' or 'Trump'.

Nah, the bakery is full of earth muffins.

Same folks as West First Pizza if you ever eat there.

If they changed the name, it might not get better. For example:

An application was made to the Nova Scotia Geographic Information Service in late 2016 to rename Squaw Island, Cape Negro, Cape Negro Island and Negro Harbour in Shelburne County

One wouldn't think that it would be hard to find a better name than "Squaw's Tit" near Canmore, Alberta but they came up with Anû Kathâ Îpa.

A California historical landmark previously named Squaw Rock was changed to Frog Woman Rock.

Squaw Peak in Phoenix was renamed Piestewa Peak

I like the "prairie bread", though. Or Cucomonga sweet wheat. That fits the taste.

Is praise bread similar to cow pies?
