... Before 1972, Utah used the nickname "Redskins". The university discontinued the practice because the term "Redskin" could be considered an ethnic slur and sometimes be considered offensive by Native Americans.

Reclaiming pejoratives is complex, and while members of tribal nations ... comprise the members of the board behind the petition, it doesn't mean that their views represent the views of most native or indigenous people."
