No you didn't mention the Contract, but one can't discuss the '94 turnover without doing so. Most knowledgeable people on both sides credit (or blame) Newt and the Contract for the turnover. I'm sure gun control was an issue for a certain percentage of the population, as it always is - and probably for you and your friends - and undoubted stirred up the NRA. Probably some lost their seats over it, but nevertheless, there was substantial support nationally for legislation such as Brady Bill as well as the "Assault Rifle" ban. If you think most Americans are single-issue voters and their most important issue is guns, you'll be the one buying the bridge to nowhere.

Then, as I said, contact your senators, urge them to push the agenda, and see what happens. All you are betting is your slim majority in The Senate. However, as evidenced by the backtracking already taking place I'd say folks a lot smarter than you can see the writing on the wall.

Hey fuzz nut...straw purchases (purchases made for the sole intent of transferring the gun to another owner) are illegal. So the guns were NOT obtained legally! I'd suggest at least knowing what you are talking about before you make a bigger "dumb ass" of yourself!

One of the problems of communicating with wing nuts is that you see everything in this tidy little black and white world where the good guys are easily separated from the bad guys. Well reality doesn't work that way Sally. Read the damn news. Day after day there are stories of gun owners (good guys according to you) who get drunk, or angry or both and shoot someone. They obtained the firearm legally, then later use it illegally.

Last week when a local kid climbed on a bookshelf and it fell over and killed him, there was no criminal intent either but the parents were still charged. But when a firearm is being used in a completely careless manner, you want to excuse it. Why is this? Why the passion for firearms among you nutters? It's just a tool right? Like leaving your kid to roast in the car? No criminal intent, they didn't think it was that hot, nor that the kid would die, but there will still be charges. Please explain why gun accidents get to use the "oops" defense successfully and other accidents don't. Explain further why shooting your kid while cleaning your shotgun wouldn't be considered negligence instead of just "a tragic mistake" when every gun instructor ever starts with "make sure it's not loaded...treat it like it is...don't point it at anything you don't intend to shoot..."
