2025 elections

April 1, really:

‘People vs. Musk’: Wisconsin holds first major statewide race in new Trump era

GOSusan CrawfordGO!
The 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court election will be held on April 1, 2025, to elect a justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court for a ten-year term. The incumbent justice, Ann Walsh Bradley, is retiring after 30 years on the court. Although the Wisconsin Supreme Court justices are considered nonpartisan, Bradley has identified as a liberal and has voted with the liberal 4–3 majority on the court, meaning the outcome of this election will decide the ideological majority of the court for at least the next year. By early March, the election had already become the most expensive judicial election in United States history, with spending exceeding $59 million.

We, as South Africans , do hereby apologize unreservedly for sending Musk over
:D
Can you come get him back? We'll throw Trump in for free
I am from Wisconsin. This Supreme Court Election is very important. The Republicans want to get back to gerrymandering the State of Wisconsin. The only way the Republicans have a majority in the House is because they have gerrymandered states like Wisconsin. Wisconsin, a purple 50/50 State has a 6-2 House Republican Majority. This does not proportionately represent us. I personally was once an Elon Musk follower. In the last year he really has shown who he is and I can no longer support him and his corruption.

Looking good for retaining the liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court Tuesday:

Susan Crawford's Chances of Winning Wisconsin Supreme Court Election: Polls

50-42, maybe. We'll see, fingers crossed. Elon has been trying to buy the election:
... Elon Musk-funded groups have spent $10 million backing Schimel, The Associated Press reported. Altogether, he and his supporters have spent about $41 million, while Crawford and her crew have spent about $32 million....
Different article:
... More than $81 million has been spent on the race so far, obliterating the record for a judicial race in the U.S. of $51 million set in Wisconsin just two years ago, according to Brennan Center tallies.

A 3rd article:
... It also comes as Tesla is battling the state of Wisconsin in court over laws prohibiting vehicle manufacturers from selling cars to consumers directly.

The New York Times reports that the lawsuit was filed in January, just days before Musk splurged cash into the race....

Musk is intensifying his efforts to swing the race red by piling over $20 million into Schimel’s campaign.
 :puke-left:
... On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared that Musk’s “tech team” was being deployed to investigate Signalgate alongside the National Security Council and the White House Counsel’s Office.
:wtf: Is there any stopping him?

Also April 1, really. Seats once held by former Reps. Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz:
Democrats outraged at Trump's changes pour millions of dollars into 2 special elections in Florida

Democrats, with few electoral outlets for their outrage at President Donald Trump's dramatic restructuring of the federal government, are pouring millions of dollars into two special elections in Florida.

That's where Democratic candidates are trying to accomplish the improbable by flipping a pair of Trump-friendly congressional seats and carving into Republicans’ narrow 218 to 213 majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. While Democratic leaders aren't predicting outright wins in such Republican-leaning districts, they say they think they'll exceed expectations. And they sound especially hopeful about the 6th Congressional District, where a public school teacher has out raised a Trump-endorsed state senator by a nearly 10-to-1 margin in the race to replace Mike Waltz, who was tapped by Trump to be a national security adviser in what was widely seen as a move without much political risk.

Democrats' challenge in both districts is formidable, but the money has been pouring in.

“The floodgates have really opened,” said Aubrey Jewett, a political scientist at the University of Central Florida. “It’s like, wow.”

Republicans, including Trump, have noticed too, and are looking to head off an embarrassing outcome. The president joined both Republican candidates by telephone on separate tele-town halls Thursday to help get out the vote in the “all-important" elections.

Winning both races next Tuesday would be colossal for a Democratic Party that has struggled to settle on a way to push back during the early days of the second Trump administration. Winning either — or even narrowing the margin in districts the president won by more than 30 points less than five months ago — could help alleviate the panic that set in among party leaders after Republicans swept both houses of Congress and the presidency in November....
Good luck, Dems. No way does a Dem win billy's district, or even gets close. Seems like a sketchy use of so much money, but what do I know.

I'd love it if I spoke to soon.
... Democrat Gay Valimont (who Gaetz defeated handily in November) has brought in more than $6 million to the Panhandle seat.

That’s four times what Patronis raised....
The seat could go to a gay?! Horrors!

:happy-cheerleaderkid: At least $22M, but your point still stands.
viewtopic.php?p=210863#p210863
... Shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time Crawford addressed cheering supporters and said Schimel had called her to concede the race. She referenced the money Musk had given in support of her opponent.

"As a little girl growing up in Chippewa Falls, I never could have imagined that I'd be taking on the richest man in the world for justice in Wisconsin — and we won," Crawford said, vowing to be a "fair, impartial and common sense justice."

Schimel told his supporters he accepted the results....
"9:30 p.m. local time"? She must have really stomped him. In fact, he knew he lost from internal polling before today.
EDIT: 54-46 per MSNBC

Not a surprise:

GOP retains two House seats in Florida, as Democrats claim 'historic' improvement

Glass half full:
... Republicans have a substantial registration edge in both districts. But the results were far closer than those seen in November, suggesting voters may be unhappy with Republicans, President Trump and his agenda.

In the First district in the area around Pensacola, Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz defeated Valimont by 32 points in November. President Trump nominated Gaetz to be his Attorney General. Gaetz later withdrew and left Congress, leaving his seat open. Patronis jumped into the race but was heavily outraised by Valimont, who drew support from Democrats across the country. Patronis' margin of victory was about 15 percentage points, 17 points lower than that seen by Gaetz in November.

In the Sixth district in central Florida, Fine beat Weil by about 14 points. That's a significantly narrower margin than that seen by then-Congressman Mike Waltz in November. Waltz defeated his Democratic opponent by 33 points. He left the seat vacant when he was named Trump's national security adviser. Weil raised ten times more money for his campaign than Fine and Democrats hoped they could pull out a victory in a red district.

Despite the losses, Democrats are celebrating what they're calling "historic performances."

The chair of the state's Democratic party, Nikki Fried said, "Florida Democrats just put the Republican Party on notice. Tonight's results represent a historic overperformance for Democrats and show that voters are already rejecting Trump's extreme agenda." ...

... Democrats notched a major victory in a Wisconsin state Supreme Court race last month in which the liberal candidate comfortably defeated her conservative opponent. Democratic candidates in two strongly Republican-leaning House districts in Florida that same night fell short of winning but were much closer than would normally be expected.

And the party picked up low-key but still major upset wins in a state Senate district in Iowa in January and a state Senate district in Pennsylvania in March.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin congratulated Ewing on his victory in a statement, saying voters want leaders who will govern for working families, which is why Democrats like him are winning up and down the ballot.

“From coast to coast, from blue to purple to even red states, Democrats are overwhelmingly outperforming Republicans in nearly every election held this year — as voters condemn Republicans’ plot to attack Social Security and health care while hiking prices on working families every chance they get,” he said. “After tonight, vulnerable House Republicans like Don Bacon are on notice.”
:---P

I missed that you posted this last night. More info:
The Trump Effect Is Here: Democrats Sweep to Victory in Historic Upset

The Donald Trump effect struck in Nebraska Tuesday night as Democrats snatched another public office away from Republicans by tying them to the president’s disastrous agenda.

The people of Omaha elected John Ewing Jr. to be the city’s first Black mayor, in a surprising defeat for Jean Stothert, the city’s three-term Republican mayor who outraised Ewing by nearly double, according to The Washington Post.

Although the seat itself is nonpartisan, Ewing’s campaign was able to channel the voters’ negative feelings about Trump’s wild first few months in office into a victory over his opponent, who had supported the president’s run in 2024.

“Let’s say no to the chaos and elect a mayor who will actually get things done,” said one ad run by Ewing’s campaign.

Stothert got in trouble for using the same anti-trans Republican playbook that Trump employed in his campaign. One controversial mailer distributed by a PAC on behalf of her campaign claimed that “Ewing stands with radicals who want to allow boys in girls’ sports.”

But Ewing said he’d made no such statement. “Nobody’s ever brought that question up. So I believe it’s a made-up issue by Jean Stothert and the Republican Party,” Ewing said, and his campaign sent a cease-and-desist letter to Stothert for the misleading attack....

Image
:laughing-rolling:
... This election indicated that Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district, which handily backed Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election, is emerging as one of the most contested battlegrounds for control of the U.S. House in the coming midterms. Republican Representative Don Bacon’s term will be up, and he will be forced to decide whether he will run for reelection in a district that includes the “Blue Dot” of Omaha.
:---P Thx trump!

Damn it, I'll have to start rooting for the Cornhuskers (Lincoln) and the Omaha Mavericks.

Wow, I thought Andrew Cuomo was a lock. Will disgraced incumbent Independent Mayor Eric Adams get oligarch support in order to reelect Adams or throw the election to Republican Curtis Sliwa?
Zohran Kwame Mamdani ... was first elected in 2020 after defeating a four-term incumbent and has since been reelected without opposition.
Giant killer, twice.
... If elected in the general election, Mamdani would become the first Muslim mayor, the first South Asian mayor, and the first mayor to be associated with the Democratic Socialists of America since 1993.

... U.S. Representative for New York's 14th congressional district Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Mamdani as her first choice for New York City mayor, saying, "Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack." She appeared at a rally for Mamdani, where she voiced her support for his candidacy and criticized his opponent Andrew Cuomo, saying: "Not ranking Cuomo [...] is the right thing to do to turn the page on the future of a Democratic party that does not continue to repeat the mistakes that have landed us here. We can never get past Donald Trump if we continue to elect the same people and make the same decisions that got us here in the first place." On June 13, Mamdani and Brad Lander cross-endorsed each other in the primary. On June 16, Mamdani and Michael Blake cross-endorsed each other. Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Mamdani, saying: "Our nation faces a fundamental choice: Will we continue with a corporate-dominated politics driven by billionaires or will we build a grass-roots movement fueled by everyday people, committed to fighting oligarchy, authoritarianism, and kleptocracy?" He reiterated his support on the platform X, with a post reading, "At this dangerous moment in history, status quo politics isn't good enough. We need new leadership that is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests & fight for the working class."
 Kingmakers? We'll see.
... Mamdani supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. He has denounced Israel's actions during the Gaza war, calling them acts of genocide.

Early in 2023, Mamdani introduced a bill called the "Not on our dime!: Ending New York Funding of Israeli Settler Violence Act", which would prohibit registered charities from donating to organizations that support illegal Israeli settlers. On October 13, 2023, he was among several protesters arrested during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in New York City, part of a series of protests calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. In November 2023, Mamdani joined Cynthia Nixon in a five-day hunger strike outside Washington, D.C. in support of an immediate ceasefire and in opposition to President Biden's support of the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip. In 2024, he held an iftar for a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan.
Ut-oh. However:
Islam ranks as the third-largest religion in New York City, following Christianity and Judaism, with estimates ranging between 600,000 and 1,000,000 observers of Islam, including 10% of the city's public school children. 22.3% of American Muslims live in New York City, with 1.5 million Muslims in the greater New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan Muslim population in the Western Hemisphere—and the most ethnically diverse Muslim population of any city in the world....
-0-? -0-?
Mamdani ... is a Shia Muslim ...
That will be a crazy message to send to Iran if the "Great Satan" elects a Shia to govern its largest city and the financial capital of the world. Would we still be an enemy or a potential ally, instead?
