A quick check on Zillow reveals estimated sales values of the properties in the range of $2 million to $10 million.
Money is spent every year on mitigating the effects of erosion on the cliffs above PCH as well as on the damage caused by the ever-encroaching sea. As sea levels continue to rise, the structures along the highway will come under increasing threat.
Perhaps it's time to consider this question: Should the structures that burned down along PCH be rebuilt?

That's not because of distance from the water, it's because there's a large drop-off from the street to the water, maybe 15-20 feet. There would be a bunch of waterfront houses get splashed, but it's really unlikely to get over that embankment.

Just stepped outside and it's gotten more noticeable - campfire smell, smoky haze in the distance. Not to the eyes burning stage, yet. I experienced much worse in Montana many times. I also hiked in inactive fire zones often. I like the change in landscape from normal and tracing the paths of fires. The one bummer is the threat of trees or parts of them falling. It's especially bad in camp. Sometimes there is no "safe" place to set up.
The firefighters seem to be making some progress.Not surprisingly, the terrain and access to the fires is a challenge. However, the only real relief looks to be Sunday with possibly a nice general rain.

Footage from earlier shows the moment the block, which was under construction, came down in the Chatuchak neighbourhood.
Workers can be seen fleeing the scene as a huge plume of smoke forms behind them.

Most of the buildings that've been destroyed in Bangkok as a result of this earthquake were under construction, a spokesperson from the Thai military says.
The Thai prime minister and relevant government departments met the army's commander at 17:00 local time (10:00 GMT), the spokesperson adds, to discuss the emergency response.
Officials have ordered the Army Disaster Relief Centre to mobilise troops, disaster relief tools and military medical units to the affected areas.
Damage to Thailand's public transport system must be assessed before it can operate normally again, the spokesperson says.
Search and rescue teams sent to scene of collapsed building in Bangkok
The number of workers missing at a collapsed construction site of a high-rise building in Thailand's capital Bangkok has now risen to 81, according to the Thai deputy PM.
Earlier, the figure was at 70.
The Thai government says it's coordinating an emergency response at the scene and in a statement online, it says they have ordered the mobilisation of search and rescue teams, and disaster centres have been ordered to prepare relief equipment and machinery.
According to Thailand's Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, there were as many as 409 people working on the site when it collapsed.
