Many if not most who object to gay marriage do so on religious grounds, often quoting that obscure and misinterpreted Leviticus quote. And there is some reason to that if one follows a religion, and a marriage is considered a religious ceremony, then one could look at marriage like participating in some other ritual, or being allowed to be buried in the church cemetary - you've gotta be a member/believer.

But - marriage is also a civil contract, with no relationship to any religion whatsoever. The language of the marriage contract is a lot sloppier than most contracts, but it is equally valid. So you're saying that if Heather and Hugh want to enter into a civil contract, that's OK, but if Heather and Buffy want to enter into an identical contract, you think the state should treat citizens Heather and Buffy differently from Heather and Hugh. Would your objection be the same if Heather and Buffy wanted to enter a contract to buy a house together? To form a partnership for a business?
