I don't know if trump will or already has done anything on this. Supposedly it's a whine/threat to the CO governor because he wants that Tina Peters bitch let out of jail. She's the only person in jail for trying to help trump steal the election in 2020. No idea if his whine/threat is serious since he says a lot of shit that isn't true or hasn't happened.Vrede too wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 11:44 amI'm hand wringing. Slashing NOAA, NWS and the NASA climate budget is especially egregious now that we're seeing such frequent climate disasters largely as a result of GQP policy. It's particularly offensive that Helene survivor SoupySales is apparently dismissive of these cuts.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 8:04 amNo hand wringing; just pointing out yet another petty stupid decision by the leader of the cult of lies and ignorance.
Then, there all of the other reductions in science funding, along with self-dealing. We used to lead the world in credible research. No longer.![]()

Bet there's going to be a lot of burst pipes. It's looking we're likely to lose power, then come Monday should power still be out, we're looking at lows in the mid teens. Not sure if even dripping faucets will help if temps reach that low in an unheated home.

I'm not familiar with the details of the CO whine/threat. However, DOGE slashed the national NOAA, NWS and NASA climate budgets.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 23, 2026 10:49 amI don't know if trump will or already has done anything on this. Trickles will usually survive the teens. It's the single digit and subzero temps that really cause problems. If you wanted to be sure you could insulate your pipes in the crawlspace.

That's good to know. I was considering shutting off my water and draining my plumbing if I lose power Monday. It's supposed to get down to the low teens that night

Got a feeling there's going to be some people missing Sunday's football games.

I would cross my fingers and trickle, but your idea is ultimately safer.Whack9 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 23, 2026 1:27 pmThat's good to know. I was considering shutting off my water and draining my plumbing if I lose power Monday. It's supposed to get down to the low teens that night![]()

Nooo, not the conference championships! Might have to get on the highway until I find a motel with power.
It's funny following the local and national panic on TV and radio. This is basically any January weekend in Missoula.

Hundreds of dollars or more. I wouldn't pay that for tickets. Maybe I could avoid spoilers and watch late night rebroadcasts of the games.

We get the same response for a half-inch rainfall. However, freeways that haven't been set for months turn really slippery really fast and at any given time an estimate of 40 percent of freeway drivers are idiots.

In a week when you get power and internet back?
When I lived in Flat Rock a quarter inch of ice would take me out for a week.

It's amazing how many people don't bother to prepare until the storm's at their door. In Florida if a hurricane is predicted, all the plywood gets bought up along with generators and they're out digging sand for bags. Seems they need a Sam Kinneson voice: "You live in FLORIDA, fool! You get hurricanes and storms - you had two last year. What did you do with the plywood you bought then? And can't you keep a reasonable supply of milk and bread and beer without having to go raid all the shelves? And how long have they told you when "hurricane season" is? Some of you rednecks buy a generator, leave it crated, and take it back if you don't use it. You're the same fools that think your little tree house on stilts is gonna still be there after 140mph wind so you're gonna "ride it out." No wonder you people voted for Trump."

There was a bad ice storm in 2005 and I think Duke got so much grief that they did a better job of maintaining their lines. Of course, Helene doesn't count. Might just be an urban thing, but I don't remember ice messing me up since.
The sports channels do reruns indefinitely, but I can't avoid spoilers very long.
I've got food, water, books, batteries, Montana-level clothing and sleeping bags, and a gassed up car and chains. However, no power = no BRD. I'm fine, though.

I miss my little house in Hendresonville during these paranoid times. I had gas lines installed right after I got the place so I was able to have heat and hot water even when the power was out. Now I'm a slave to electrons being pushed down a wire.

Amazing that someone who's been hibernating for eight months suddenly comes to life and babbles about Greenland. Did you mean Iceland? Go back to sleep.

I checked on the Potawatomi Indians who used to be my clients in far northern Wisconsin. High of -14, low -24. The last year I was up there with them, the low was -28. I didn't really expect the car to start, but no problem. And still people parking their snowmobiles in the casino car park.
