Re: Weather
Looks like NOAA and NWS are ignoring DHS stupidity.
I hadn't thought about the meme potential, but “destructive ICE” is a pretty good one.CNN’s Jake Tapper expressed disbelief that Homeland Security officials reportedly advised the Federal Emergency Management Agency to avoid using the word ‘ice’ as they continue to update the public on major upcoming winter storms, so as not to encourage comparisons to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, quipping, “Another incredibly idiotic story.”
The moment occurred during Friday’s The Lead With Jake Tapper, as CNN’s Gabe Cohen told Tapper that DHS officials under President Donald Trump asked FEMA to use the term “freezing rain” instead of ice in public messaging and social media posts about the upcoming winter weather event, in which the storm and ice track is forecasted to stretch over 2,000 miles across the East Coast.
“What they are worried about here is that by posting something like, ‘Watch out for the ice,’ that it’s gonna become an opportunity for a meme, for internet fodder, for public ridicule against the Department of Homeland Security,” explained Cohen, mentioning heightening anti-ICE protests in Minnesota after the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an immigration officer.
... “When you say ‘freezing rain,’ that makes me think, ‘Oh, I’ll put on a raincoat.’ It doesn’t make me think ‘ice,'” said Tapper.
“This is largely an ice event,” clarified Cohen, emphasizing that “a lot of states that I’ve talked to” say they are expecting “destructive ice” causing widespread damage to power grids and roads. “It is pretty remarkable that Homeland Security is saying, ‘Please try to avoid using that word.'” ...

Re: Weather
Your support for fossil fuels far exceeds mine. I remember when you stated some years ago that you'd gladly pay more for gas if Obama was not re elected. Or something like that. The only reason I put gas in was because I noticed the house next door has gas lines to it. I wanted to be able to have heat and hot water during power failures, so I did by getting a gas water heater and a wall mount gas heater. I considered coming up with my own alternative system based on the mixing of chemical compounds that when combined produce heat. After the first few explosions, I abandoned it and went with gas.supesalemgr2 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 24, 2026 6:28 amSo true. Having natural gas is a real benefit. It's really dumb snark. Duke gets most of its electricity from natural gas and coal. You were going to "support" fossil fuel either way.

A couple of T Rex's were chatting:
Hey, did you hear that boom?
Yeah but it's probably nothing.
Anyway, it's not close around here
Whatever it was, it won't affect us.
World climate has changed drastically many times over the last billion years, and it's not going to stop just because some fools "don't believe" in it or assign political significance to a worldwide natural phenomenon.

Re: Weather
The way things are set up, you don't have much choice but to "support" fossil fuels. Unless you want to go live in the woods in a minimalist sort of gig. I like to laugh about how gasoline used to be considered worthless and was just dumped out back in the nineteenth century when kerosene was the thing....gasoline is lighter and collects at the top of a refinery tank. I figure more than a few of those guys blew themselves up fooling around with gasoline.Vrede too wrote: ↑Sat Jan 24, 2026 1:20 pmviewtopic.php?p=223864#p223864neoplacebo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 24, 2026 11:26 amYour support for fossil fuels far exceeds mine. "It's freaking cold!"
Since the mid 1970s, global temperatures have been warming at around 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade. However, weather imposes its own dramatic ups and downs over the long term trend. We expect to see record cold temperatures even during global warming. Nevertheless over the last decade, daily record high temperatures occurred twice as often as record lows. This tendency towards hotter days is expected to increase as global warming continues into the 21st Century.

Wintry mix here so far. Too hard to sweep, too thin to shovel. I put down some sand and salt, will reassess later.

No freezing rain yet. Just sleet. I think it's likely to get worse around 2-6. Revised estimates have been trending lower than what was expected. We shall see.supesalemgr2 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 25, 2026 9:26 amSo far not as bad as I anticipated. We still have several hours before precip stops.

Yeah, it's hard not to support fossil fuels in our society unless you go live in a cave. Looks like I was wrong that supes was the one cheering for high dollar gas. But he jumped in and cheered for it after the fact. And I remember big ugly.....he's the one who always spoke of "the commander and chief."Vrede too wrote: ↑Sat Jan 24, 2026 1:20 pmviewtopic.php?p=223864#p223864neoplacebo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 24, 2026 11:26 amYour support for fossil fuels far exceeds mine.
