He does give a lot of stuff a very broad and benign interpretation, I think. Bit of an exaggeration, but he's the sort that would read about a guy shooting a kid who let his dog poop in the yard and defend it with "well, a man has a right to defend himself against trespassers defacing his property, doesn't he"? You have to wonder how somebody like Supes for example, who was probably a real Republican back in the day, has been affected by transmogrification of what used to be a conservative wing of politics. That is, has he himself gone from Rockefeller and Reagan to rabid, or is he just going along with the crazies because they're not Democrats.

He doesn't seem to be rabid, but he certainly is tolerant.

There's nothing resembling outrage.

No question I cherish being labeled a "Reagan republican". I was reluctant to initially back Trump because he is not true conservative. He has earned the "populist" moniker in his terms.

Trump has fought against all aspect of the VRA, and has made continuous and vigorous efforts to suppress voting.

Reagan viewed immigration as a vital, renewing force for American greatness, highlighted by his signing of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which provided a legal path to residency (amnesty) for roughly 3 million undocumented immigrants who had lived in the U.S. since before January 1, 1982, after paying fines and back taxes. Trump has held "mass deportation" as one of the cornerstones of his efforts, and including trying to end DACA and criminally prosecuting immigrants for paperwork issues.

Ronald Reagan popularized the "Eleventh Commandment"—"Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican". Trump, well, you know.

That's a looooong leap from Reagan Republican to anybody who would support Tru*p.

Yeah, but I was thinking they'll start doing it in 27, especially if they lose the Senate, too. I think trump has added to it considerably just so far and he's not even halfway done. And then if they ever get power back again, they will immediately push for a tax cut. Trickle down economics only means somebody else will have to deal with the mess others created. At least that's how it's been the past forty five years or so.

... MAGA, though, has a reason to feel nostalgia for a pandemic that killed millions. It was an era when the GOP got to do what they love more than anything: play the victim as loudly as possible before huge audiences that were especially vulnerable to disinformation.

... Echoing Trump's "hoax" language about the pandemic, MAGA decided the whole thing was being exaggerated — or even made up altogether — by Democrats for hazy but nefarious purposes. This created endless opportunities for conservative white people to insist that they are the most oppressed, put-upon people on the planet.

Fascist movements have historically thrived in times of great social stress that leave people vulnerable to misinformation and eager for scapegoats to blame, and the pandemic era was no different. With people isolated and bored at home during the lockdown, many were more willing to engage in conspiracy theory content the runs rampant online. The pandemic was the peak of QAnon, sucking in millions with elaborate fantasies that Trump was a savior out to defeat a worldwide Satanic child cannibalism cabal. Many people, some of whom had even identified as liberal in the past, were radicalized to the right. Fauci became a favorite scapegoat for people who wanted to believe there was an evil mastermind behind the virus, instead of viral replication and transmission. It's easy to forget it now, but Jan. 6 was fueled by Covid-19 and the sense of disconnection that drove a lot of once-ordinary people to lose their intellect and rationale.

The nostalgia is for that fascist window.

It truly is incredible that so many people have been convinced of so many things that just aren't true......a stolen election, massive voter fraud, "communists" all over the place, transgender folks are an urgent priority.......it's all just so stupid. I've almost convinced myself that Republican leaders (with massive assist by Fox News and the other nutjob media) incessantly dwell on stuff like that just to keep the "poorly educated" distracted from what the actual problems of the country are. I honestly would not believe what the US has become over the last ten years just reading of it in a book, but witnessing it in real time is jarring. Fish slap emoji, pile of shit emoji.
