In Memoriam

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

My immediate knee jerk reaction is that its really strange to appoint an immediate family member to a senate position as it reeks of nepotism, but it looks like it's been done before, albeit not super common. It sounds like it's generally done when there's a short stint left in the term, and done so as to not give possible candidates any incumbency advantage when the election happens shortly after the appointment.

I was worried someone like Nancy Mace would get the appointment.
She'll be a good drone for seven months and do as she's told.

Mary Bono replace Sonny in Congress, but she was actually elected. And, despite having about the same qualifications as Graham, she was re-elected for 5 or six terms and did a pretty decent job as repugs go. And sure, everybody understands having a placeholder, but somehow it still seems wrong to complain about Biden's autopen and put in a Senator that will be totally run by the staff.

Sort of amazing that an emergency election will be held within three weeks, hardly any money will be spent and a candidate chosen, most likely after a runoff.

Wham Bam!

How screwed up is our election process?

The timing required a quick response and resolution. Time will tell if the SC GOP is able to provide citizens a viable process.

It's SC, not great odds that any alternative would have been better.

For example, disgraced former Gov Mark Sanford is vying to go "hiking on the Appalachian Trail" all the way to filling Lindsey's seat  . The special primary will be held on August 11. He's polling in single digits among a crowded field.

Maybe Sanford will get the message in this latest effort at relativity.

Well, Sandford has always had a somewhat exaggerated view of himself, but he did serve two terms in Congress after his hiking adventure, so given the current moral and ethical standards of GOP voters, my guess is that he's just gotten too boring and shop-worn for them. Maybe if he mugged a couple of old ladies and used their SNAP cards to buy champagne and then used the champagne bottles to make molotov cocktails and chucked those back into the local homeless shelter, he's have a better chance with his electorate.

That's really sad. Considering that every aspect of her public physical appearance was artificial, she was one of the most honest, sincere, and kind entertainers you're gonna find. She spent millions on her community, created a literacy foundation, for a while gave out $1,000/month to victims of the fire there several years ago, and helped many musicians with their careers. Her presence will be missed in the world.

Rockstar (Dolly Parton album)

Rockstar is the forty-ninth and final studio album by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. It was released on November 17, 2023, by Butterfly Records and Big Machine Records. The album is a collaborative project with a variety of rock musicians, marking Parton's only album-length foray into the genre.

... Rockstar received generally positive reviews from music critics. Commercially, it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 128,000 equivalent album units in its first week. It became Parton's highest-charting studio album as well as topping the Country and Rock Albums charts....

Recording and release

Parton was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 and initially declined the honor as she has a background in country music and not rock. In response, she declared her intention to record an album of rock covers with a host of musical guests from that genre to justify her inclusion. She performed "Rockin' It", an original song, at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
That is so cool!
Parton reached out to a variety of dream collaborators over the course of several months, including several of the artists she performed with at the Hall of Fame ceremony such as fellow 2022 inductees Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo, Simon Le Bon and Rob Halford, and other guests Pink, Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow....

Parton pursued Mick Jagger to provide vocals on her Rolling Stones cover, but he had a scheduling conflict and failed to reunite Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant for her new cover of "Stairway to Heaven", a favorite of her husband Carl Dean....
