2026 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

... Lacore, who served more than 30 years in the Navy and oversaw more than 60,000 sailors, campaigned against Hegseth’s disastrous Pentagon leadership and Trump’s increasingly unpopular war in Iran.

Now she’s headed to Congress after flipping a traditionally Republican district that had been gerrymandered to favor the GOP.
:D Opps

If anyone knows government administration and military policy, she does.

Most expensive election ever, $11.5B before the final reports are in. I think this includes presidential elections. This MUST change, but it might take a new SCOTUS. The lion's share of this spending came from Mush and the party of "fiscal responsibility". FAIL!

Outgoing :D FL Gov DerSantis, paraphrased:
This means that no SCOTUS nominations will be approved.
Yay. Then, the fascist added:
Unless something changes in the next 6 weeks.

Tennessee and West Virginia will be some of the last to get the memo.
 MS may have gotten it. Surprising. And I'd go ahead and put AL in with those first two.

Their Sens and most of their Reps are in the minority. :D
There was a guy on my ballot named Eddie Murphy. I don't remember if he was running for governor or state legislature. He was listed as Independent and I almost voted for him just for his name. Went with Green for governor, got Marsha. I guess I could start sending here those "RESIGN"" letters like I used to. If she puts Hegseth in as a Senator, I will send her the "resign" thing and some other words.

No new taxes, but an extra 11 billion to throw at an election.

Elon Musk jokes about GOP election defeat after spending record sums on party

... "Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time," Musk said on X, including the shrug emoji.
Smarmy asshole.
Musk contributed nearly half a billion dollars to Republican political efforts, making him the largest individual contributor in a federal election cycle since unlimited election spending was allowed in 2010, according to campaign finance tracker OpenSecrets.

His donations have mostly gone to his Republican-leaning America PAC, as well as to the Republican Senate Leadership Fund (SLF) super PAC.
Senate Minority Fund, ftft. :D
The SLF used Musk's $158 million in donations in September to support Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate candidate in Texas.
Never bet on the worst AG in America.
The Texas Senate election topped the list in terms of expenditure, with Paxton's Democrat challenger James Talarico facing more than $200 million in opposition from outside spending groups.

Talarico defeated Paxton, a close ally of Trump, to become the first Democrat to win statewide office in Texas since 1994.

He took aim at Musk at a victory rally in Austin.

"In this race, we went up against our own Goliaths. The richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world and the entire Washington, DC establishment," Talarico said.
I listened to him elaborate on the David vs Goliath parable. Youngest Senator. First seminarian?
He also targeted billionaires "who own the social media algorithms, who own the cable news networks, who own the politicians fighting on our screens" and who "want us at each other's throats."

Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated incumbent Texas Governor Greg Abbott in another blow to the deeply conservative southern border state.

Hinojosa said she asked at the start of her campaign if Texas was "a state that is by and for the people of Texas."

"Or is this the billionaire's world and we just live here? Does Texas belong to the parents and their children? Or the billionaires trying to dismantle our schools? Does Texas belong to the farmers and ranchers who have worked this land for generations? Or the corporations trying to buy it up?" she said after her victory.
Eat the rich!
Talarico and Hinojosa both campaigned on tighter regulations for AI data centers.

The spread of data centers across Texas has become a central issue as residents worry about rising electricity bills, water use and strain on the power grid.

Musk has moved the headquarters of his comapanies Tesla, SpaceX and X to Texas.

"Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now," Musk joked on X after the result.
You LOSE, Mush. Maybe try moving ops to TN? :P
The Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that the government cannot limit political spending by corporations, unions and other groups if they spend it independently of candidates.

A lower court decision ruled that these organizations could also raise an unlimited amount of money from donors.

Now, big donors can allocate vast sums of money to try to influence elections and remain anonymous by donating through secondary organizations.

Spending sprees by donors have surged under Trump's administration, with Musk's large donations encapsulating the new reality of pay-to-play politics.
Our democracy is still under grave threat and there's little Congress can do about it. :(

You have to wonder if they'll keep throwing the pearls to the swine after they count up how much they spent on this campaign and got literally nothing. They couldn't have done worse if they'd spent nothing. Maybe it's starting to take something other than limitless money to win. It would be interesting to know how many successful Dem candidates were outspent by their repug opponent in this election.

Almost all of the non-incumbents I would guess.

In some places the obscene spending backfired. Opps.

NH elected the first ever openly gay male to the US Senate. I know I know, but Lindsay doesn't count :) . rainbow emoji

GA - First female Black Gov in US history. My brother is thrilled.

January - 10% of US Govs will be Black. My Maryland is one of them still. I'm thrilled. Gov Wes Moore: The Dems should have invested more in the MS Senate race. It's still close.

My old home, western Montana, has flipped a US House seat blue, adding to the Dem majority. I'm so proud, it's been 30 years since MT had a Dem in the House. I'm so proud!

It's only in hindsight that investing more national resources in Mississippi would have made sense. There was nobody - nobody - who would have thought he had a realistic of even stretch chance of winning.

True, but it also would have been a powerful signal to US Blacks.

Speaking of long shots, my man Bernie! was a big winner yesterday. Who woulda thunk it? DSA all the way! Sure, most Dem winners aren't DSA, but listen to what they're talking about. Bernie! was way out front on many off their issues.

Fascist DerSantis: This was "close to an extinction level event" for Repubs...."Plastered into oblivion."
:D Nice metaphors. Sadly, his FL returned a GQP US Sen and elected a new GQP Gov, a rare bright spot for the GQP. Is he still prepping a POTUS run?

Ftr, Vrede is feeling buffer than he did on Monday. ;-)
