We Are Legion

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I can't tell you why, but for some I've always hated the Guy Fawkes mask. When I see it, the first thing that comes to mind is that movie V for Vendetta where those terrorists succeeded in taking down the government so they could institute sharia law (even though this part is not actually in the movie its heavily implied).

It doesn't help that the first image I found when I searched "Million Mask March" had two of the guys wearing fedora hats.

Conspiracy theory time fellas: Time Warner apparently owns the rights to the Guy Fawkes mask. Do they get a cut whenever one of those masks is sold? Here's how it all went down:

1) V for Vendetta was released in 2005. People watched it, Time Warner profited. It was a good movie (I liked it), but wasn't a box office hit like they wanted it to be. Add the increased popularity of pirating movies, profits continue to shrink. There needs to be a creative solution to movie piracy.
2) Economic recession hits in 2007. Political turmoil. People are pissed at our the government for getting us involved in pointless wars. People are mad at the establishment. The country is on the verge of imploding, martial law is on the table. There needs to be a way to relieve domestic pressure.
3) TW makes a clandestine phone call to the president: "Mr. President, I scratch your back you scratch mine...". The deal is made.
4) Viral marketing campaign is initiated. TW agents are planted around various internet forums to popularize the guy fawkes mask used in the V for Vendetta movie. TW profits.
5) 2008. Angsty college students buy GF masks in droves to wear with their fedora hats and side swiped emo cuts. As the V for Vendetta GF mask becomes more conspicuous, interest in the V for Vendetta movie rises. Hackers Anonymous support groups adopt it as required watching for all members. Tech savvy college students pirate the movie as TW expects, watch it, become politically active, but can't download a V for Vendetta mask so they go and buy one off Amazon. Piracy is defeated. TW Profits.
6) November, 2008: Obama is elected as domestic pressure is relieved thanks to TW for their help in diffusing the near societal collapse of the US and providing a creative outlet for the angst of its young citizen. Kickbacks are provided and promises are made to TW. TW profits.
7) 2011 -
Spoiler:

What I really like about this story is that the other passengers chose solidarity over meek acceptance.
Flight attendants are not what they were when I first flew on an airliner.
People are crazy and times are strange. I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range.
I used to care, but, things have changed.

Anonymous-Linked Hackers Accessed U.S. Government Computers, FBI Reportedly Warns
Adobe spokeswoman Heather Edell said she was not familiar with the FBI report. She added that the company has found that the majority of attacks involving its software have exploited programs that were not updated with the latest security patches.

Anonymous responded to WikiLeaks' VISA accounts being shut down by enlisting followers to download and run a Denial of Service tool. It didn't take skills; only gullibility.

Almost none of the 88+ arrested (plus 40 more served with search warrants and warned by the FBI) were skilled hackers who knew the risks. Many of the arrested LulzSec members were not skilled hackers who knew the risks.

They were otherwise innocent dupes, conned by Anonymous's b*llsh*t claims of protection through anonymity, strength in numbers and brotherhood and sisterhood.
Those cases have been winding their way through the courts.

IT World: Wisconsin man sentenced for participating in Anonymous DDoS
Eric J. Rosol, 38, is said to have admitted that on Feb. 28, 2011, he took part in a denial of service attack for about a minute on a Web page of Koch Industries -- Kochind.com, using software called a Low Orbit Ion Cannon Code, which was loaded on his computer

Rosol, who pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of accessing a protected computer, was sentenced to two years of federal probation and ordered to pay US$183,000 in restitution, the Department of Justice said in a statement.
But since \V/ will no doubt play dumb and pretend to misinterpret my post, I'll state the obvious: The penalty is ridiculous, from a court beneath contempt rather than above it. By that standard the only thing between the Koch Brothers themselves and a half-million year prison sentence is a refusal to prosecute the rich and powerful.

But handing otherwise innocent dupes a weapon and lying to them about being "Anonymous" when they use it, is no less worthy of contempt.

Have no fear for those caught, sent to jail and/or bankrupted by legal fees, etc.

Someone in Anonymous will "launch a Twitter storm" on their behalf.

Putting on a Guy Fawkes mask and blathering in a YouTube video makes you a "computer geek" in the same way that putting a fish bowl over your head and moving in slow motion makes you an astronaut.

Except that real-life astronauts aren't the joke that Guy Fawkes is. Caught, arrested, tortured, drawn and quartered, he was a loser's loser who accomplished nothing except to spawn "Guy Fawkes Day", which still ridicules him and burns him in effigy over 400 years later. The whole "V for Vendetta" / Guy Fawkes thing is a British joke on American teenagers, and the Brits probably laugh themselves silly when they see someone wearing the mask who isn't in on the joke.
