I think Trump and his team are throwing Melania under the bus in order to avoid admitting how unethical, incompetent and self-destructive the people Trump hires are. I feel sorry for her, she apparently was never thrilled with the run for POTUS and never wanted the FLOTUS nominee limelight. If Trump was a real man and decent husband, he would have already fired a speechwriter even if Melania did do the plagiarizing herself.

Agreed. Somebody's head should have rolled to protect the virtue of sweet Lady Melania. There are, I think, only about three times you could use someone else's words. One, if they are so well known that everybody knows you're quoting. Say "Ask not what your country..." and credit to JFK is implied. Movie quotes are also in that category. Second, if you give credit, as in, "as Tricky Dick used to say, 'I am not a crook."" Or, finally, when the thought expressed is widely and commonly used and no actual source is known, "time heals a broken heart." The Trumpeteers tried to make a case for #3, but the specifics of those lines was too close. Sure Melania's parents could (and maybe did) teach her to work hard and be true to her word. And she could (and probably does) think children should be limited only by their own dreams or whatever, but overall, when you look at what was said by both in its context, there's no college professor in the world that would let you get away with that close.

Update: Plagiarism-checking site says chances of Melania's content being "accidental" is less than 1 in a trillion. "Nevertheless, Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort proposed that the similarities between the speeches are indeed that one-in-1-trillion chance. "These are common words," he argued" Idiots.

We (the citizens) get pretty much the candidates we deserve. First, we only get to choose from those who run. And if we started with a blank page entitled "Best Person(s) to Run the Country, none of the names of the 17 clown car members, nor Bernie nor Hillary would likely be on it. But it's very likely that whoever ended up on that list would not have any interest in running. We've created a process that makes it highly unlikely that the best people will ever run.
