That's hundreds of millions of dollars that could have been better spent by the Republicans in a less intelligence-insulting way, and the election was close enough that it may very well have made a difference.

That's sums up Ron Paul nicely. He'll often be the lone voice of reason on an issue, before veering off into wingnut land.

For example he was the main voice opposing the Trans-Texas Corridor mega-highway - where companies tried to skip looting the state treasury to rob the land owners directly. But then he ranted about a TTC-like megahighway from Mexico to Canada, something that only existed in the minds of the most gullible conspiracy theorists. He also spread Amero and North American Union wingnuttery.
