Thanks, Snoopy

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

That's pretty outrageous. I predict it doesn't make it out of committee unscathed.

Let's hope so O Really. If it does come out of committee I will be interested in how members voted.

I think saying that it allows warrantless access is just spin

the bill is an attempt to update an 80s bill; it seems that there have been some changes in technology in the past 30 years. so, before you get your faux panties all in a wad over the evil dems coming for your email freedoms, stop and think for a second - law enforcement currently has access to your email and rarely uses a warrant.

I'm no expert on this bill or what it replaces and I'm sure that no matter what it says or who is pushing it, I'm probably against most of it.

google the bill and you will see faux headlines about your freedoms being ravaged by the dems

other sources seem to have more information that paints a different picture

btw suckermanager - I answered your question on the vet day thread but last I looked you didn't answer mine

Interesting. Wneglia, did you get your "Thanks Dems" spin from some other article than the one you linked?
No, just that one.

faux just has an evil picture of obama coming through your computer and then a link that even wiggley could follow to the article he posted

other more reliable sources do have condemning response to specifics in the bill

Okay then, about the points and questions in my first post on the topic?
I should have just thanked Leahy until further information is available. I would speculate that Obama favors this bill, since he approved the $2B NSA spy center in Utah.

Update

Look's like Leahy had a change of heart.

I guess they will have to pass the bill so we can see what is in it.

Effective policing is never about throwing out a 20 mile long drift net and seeing what you can dredge up. When the FBI and others demand the ability to spy without a warrant, that's what they're doing. It's why I'm in favour of end-to-end encryption and anonymity being baked into the internet - it will force the police to do their job properly. Fishing expeditions = bad policing.

In the gun control thread I talked about how the government wouldn't revoke or override the Constitution; it would simply reinterpret as needed. An excellent example is old 1986 law which considers any e-mail over a hundred and eighty days old - even in an account you use every day - to be "abandoned." No warrant needed.
