Ordinarily I'd agree with you that the greatest gift to Dems would be Sarah Palin as the Republican Presidential nominee. IRL, I still think that. But there is another possibility. Four years is a long time in dog years, and certainly Palin was a dog in 2008, and still had a lot of fleas in 2012. But suppose she's not really an idiot - just over-faced too soon in the big leagues. Suppose she got serious and got a team of coaches who'd teach her how to handle interviews, neutralize out the parts people laugh at, tutor her about geography, names of magazines and newspapers, drills her in "rain in Spain" - works with her like a real-life Liza Doolittle. She gets polished, packaged, and promoted and suddenly nobody is laughing. Everybody thinks she's cool and oh so clever in how she makes Katie look like a Channel 5 intern. They create a new Sarah story - bringing cooperation among warring Alaska party factions; she didn't shoot wolves from a helicopeter, she was counting them for conservation of a new habitat; basically, she gets the Michael Vick rehabilitation - from most reviled and ridiculed to another starting quarterback job.

She actually could get elected. But the scary part is that she wouldn't really be any smarter or any less of a loon. Makes a zombie takeover look like a good thing, doesn't it?

They'd have to repeat their 2012 technique of standing Bachmann, Cain, Santorum and Perry next to a candidate to give the candidate the illusion of intelligence, sanity and viability. Then trot out Trump and others once in a while to make her look even more intelligent, sane and viabile by comparison.
