The Supremes

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Aren't they supposed to be the arbiters of the constitution instead of fucking up the constitution?
They're supposed to have a deep understanding of the law, too, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
If we ever have a liberal or moderate court again I will throttle the first person who whines about it being "activist".
Got that noise right.

Sotomayor is not wrong, these Supremes are extreme, partisan and incompetent.
Historic.

Nice legacy Roberts.

US Supreme Court rules Trump has immunity for official, not private acts

Joe should go shoot 6 justices and call it an "official act".
And throw trump in Gitmo. :puke-left:

They've effectively given trump cover to avoid trial for the immediate future.

This country is fucked.
Another take on it:

Opinion
The Supreme Court just did Biden a huge favor by giving Trump immunity

This is as much of a reach as mtgreene's impeachment motions against Biden, but I'm still glad and hoping she follows through. Hope she at least gets some dem sponsors and endorsements.

She can make credible cases for impeaching Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. Floor votes might be useful in purple districts.

I think the only reason this is such a brouhaha is that it involves Trump, a known habitual and intentional lawbreaker. Sure there will be a lot of court rulings, but bottom line is that violation of a law isn't part of anybody's official duties. Lots of technicalities, but I don't find it an unreasonable decision for any normal sane responsible President - which of course doesn't include Trump.

Saw online:
Nixon called and would like his tapes back.

Can co-conspirators still be prosecuted? For example, if TRE45QN can't be held accountable for the fake electors scam, what about the fake electors and the lawyers that organized them? Is there blanket immunity if POTUS was engaged in an "official act"?

Rational answer: No, because the fact that Trump can't be prosecuted doesn't make it lawful. Further, while many if not most of those involved in fake electors thought they were following Trump, none of them had any legitimate obligation to act unlawfully just because they thought Trump said so.

Real Life answer: who knows? The country as we used to know it is doomed anyway.

This is an interesting take, the Supremes in addition to upending presidential immunity granted themselves additional power as final arbiters of what is a presidential crimes as well.

Quite the power grab and upends checks and balances.

... Legal analyst Joyce White Vance noted that a president with such broad immunity could order the assassination of Supreme Court justices, and retired military leader Mark Hertling wrote that he was “trying to figure out how a commander can refuse an illegal order from someone who is issuing it as an official act.”...

Rare action to applaud:
Supreme Court turns away OSHA challenge over opposition from Thomas, Gorsuch

Over opposition from two conservative justices, the Supreme Court on Tuesday turned away a challenge that could’ve gutted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

An Ohio-based construction contractor backed by Republican-led states and anti-regulatory interests contended Congress unconstitutionally delegated its legislative powers to the executive branch when it gave such broad authority to the agency, which sets and enforces workplace standards.

In a brief order, the court declined to take up the contractor’s appeal after a lower court rejected the challenge.
:happy-cheerleaderkid:
Conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch publicly indicated they would’ve taken up the case, but at least four votes were needed....
