Well sure we're less sensitive to offending Indians. And Vikings too. But I don't think that every use of Indian reference, name, or likeness is reasonably offensive. Chief Wahoo could be understood to be offensive. "Redskins" has more negative connotations than positive. The Spokane Indians, with Saalish lettering on their uniforms and a Tribe sponsorship in their stadium - maybe not so much. I don't think Chief Osceola could reasonably be considered disrespectful, even if obnoxious fans chop. A lot of the objection to Indian imagery has to do with stereotypes of negative, primitive, uncivilized behaviour. Tribes had a much bigger culture than scalping invading white people. But many tribes did have brave and skillful warriors, at least according to some reports by those that knew, say, General Custer for example.

I know that not everybody on my list of other examples of "people as mascots" is comparable to Indian usage, but for most of them the principle is the same - take some characterization that is in some way related to the team or the area the team is in and focus on that character being a vigorous competitor. Most Irish people aren't aggressive fighters, but many are - along with being major drinkers. Are real "Deacons" offended with the use of "Demon"? Probably some are.

I largely agree. "Braves" is kinda patronizing, but not the worst of names. My biggest issue in ATL and Tallahassee is with those "obnoxious fans chop." If it was just a few, no big deal, but I think tens of thousands chopping and chanting in oblivious unison sucks.
