Iran War

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I can understand Trump being disappointed with European countries not rushing to join the action in Iran. However, he should not be surprised and no need to make a public issue of it. The EU leaders have a constituency that does not understand the threat Iran was,
I'm pretty sure Trump has a constituency that does not understand the threat Iran was, too. Not that it makes any difference to him.
It seems clear that Iran would like for the US and some other infidel countries to just go away. And they use the language of crusaders, not unlike Hegspeth. But it's a big jump to go from that to actually attacking. One of the things missing here is some actual documented intelligence showing an imminent threat.

It's incredible.

They were decommissioned AFTER the June Israel/US war on Iran. It gets dumber:

U.S. Navy Minesweepers Assigned To Middle East Have Been Moved To Pacific (Updated)
Two of the three Littoral Combat Ships that had taken over the minesweeping role in the Middle East have just appeared in Malaysia.

I'm convinced they're hiding the ships from harms way because the public backlash of losing one would be too much to bear.
When it comes to why the ships are now in Malaysia, TWZ also reached out to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which directed us to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet. We were then directed by Fifth Fleet back to CENTCOM. CENTCOM is the top U.S. military command for operations in the Middle East. Fifth Fleet is the Navy’s numbered fleet in the Middle East, with its commander dual-hatted as head of Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT). Fifth Fleet and NAVCENT are headquartered in Manama, Bahrain, in the Persian Gulf.

That's a reason for moving them out of Manama, Bahrain, but thousands of miles away to Malaysia?! We've moved dozens of ships INTO the region in order to fight NuttyYahoo's War. What about the risk to them? At least the LCSs have stealth design.

Big difference in loitering a few hundred miles away in the gulf or the Med and sweeping the Straits.

Well sure, but thousands of miles away when their whole purpose for being there is a conflict like this one? Malaysia cancels the option of using the minesweepers in a timely fashion entirely.

Fire damage, clogged toilets, and sinking morale: USS Gerald R Ford to set sails for repairs in Crete

Image
The US Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford departs Souda Bay on the island of Crete on 26 February, 2026. The carrier has suffered problems during its extended deployment.

The ship lasted all of 20 days minus the transit time from Crete to the Middle East.

The crew have the burden of knowing they've been deployed to two illegal wars without a break - Venezuela and Iran. The first in service to oil companies, the second in service to Israel's rightwing. American interests are not part of the equation.

Yer doin' a heckuva job, MAGA.

At sea for almost nine months, and currently stationed in the Red Sea to support the war on Iran, the carrier will reportedly set sail for Crete for repairs.
The carrier, crewed by more than 4,000 sailors, has reportedly suffered significant problems with its toilet system while at sea, with US media describing clogged systems and long lines for restrooms on the ship.

The issue is not new – a 2020 report from the US Government Accountability Office said the ship’s toilet system was subject to “unexpected and frequent clogging” and requires acid flushes on a regular basis to clear it, at a cost of $400,000 each time.

Attention all crew members: the poop deck is closed until further notice. All members wishing to use poop deck facilities should do so at the railing, starboard side aft.

The Sunni were and are a minority in Iraq. They were only running things when Saddam was in charge. The US overthrew the Sunni leadership and even declared the Baath Party effectively illegal. The Shia won the initial election in Iraq. Iran has been Shia for a long time. That's why the Iraq war made no sense unless Dick Cheney was actually an Iranian mole.
"That's why the Iraq war made no sense"

The one constant about Islamists is they make no sense.
Basically, the Iraq war only served to unite the Shiites in Iraq and Iran against the Sunnis. So we spent trillions and sacrificed thousands of lives to serve as as intermediary in the alliance of Iraq and Iran. The entire tihng was ignorantly pursued....no regard to regional or cultural tradition....the whole thing based on a lie (weapons of mass destruction....nuclear weapons in Iraq) just like this current one is based on the same identical lie....nuclear weapons in Iran are an imminent threat. I though insurance people considered the worst case situation in any given circumstance. Oh, I forgot to remind you that our ouster of the Sunnis in Iraq, and our total fawning over the even more radical Wahabbi Sunnis in Saudi Arabia only served to unite the people we ousted in Iraa with our own "allies" of the same religious stripe. They probably still can't believe it and have all bought an extra AK-47.

Tell me what about the war between Christians in Northern Ireland made sense. If you're asserting that religion is not a sensible reason to engage in violence, I'd agree with you. But I don't think that's what you're saying at all. Tell that to the different sets of Jews in Israel....they themselves are having problems with their Orthodox being exempt from military service. Using religion as a cloak for violence and conquest and cloaking it in the guise of patriotism or some other such nonsense has been going on forever. Religion is the worst thing that has ever happened to mankind.
I also have never understood the situation in Noethern Ireland.
But I'm pretty sure you don't consider Catholics or Protestants to share the "constant....is they make no sense." Why would you think Muslims of different sects universally make no sense? How about Hindus? Buddhists? Does only one religion "make sense" to you? Does this serve at all to illuminate my statement that religion is the worst human influence I can think of. See what it's done to you?
Some liberals have stated that religion drives their family apart.

Whoops.

The situation spirals, who could've guessed?

Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran. A relatively small section of the whole has been hit. The United States knew nothing about this particular attack, and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen. Unfortunately, Iran did not know this, or any of the pertinent facts pertaining to the South Pars attack, and unjustifiably and unfairly attacked a portion of Qatar's LNG Gas facility. NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar - In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before. I do not want to authorize this level of violence and destruction because of the long term implications that it will have on the future of Iran, but if Qatar's LNG is again attacked, I will not hesitate to do so. Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Understatement.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if infrastructure like this 👇 gets blown up, as of this moment it will take at least a decade to recover from this war - and the truth is that the world's energy picture is probably changed forever.

This single facility 👇produced roughly 20% of global LNG supply (https://aljazeera.com/news/2026/3/18/qa ... s-facility) and, as of 2011, had taken $70 billion to build (https://energyintel.com/0000017b-a7be-d ... fe36330001).

What makes this even worse is that Iran's strike on this was retaliation after Israel attacked their South Pars gas field which draws from the same natural gas reservoir, which is the world's largest by far (9,700 km² - about the size of Qatar itself).

Heck, on the list of the 25 largest natural gas fields (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_n ... gas_fields) this single reservoir holds roughly 40% of their combined recoverable reserves - and is nearly 6 times bigger than the 2nd biggest field in the world. And, unlike many of the others on the list, it's only at 10% depletion (meaning 90% of the gas is still there).

Which means that, probably for many years, a huge share of the gas from the world's largest reservoir simply won't be extractable, as infrastructure on both sides - Qatar's and Iran's - has now been blown up.

From a global energy supply perspective, we're deep into worst-case scenario territory.
